Das hier erstmals kritisch und kommentiert edierte Werk ist Rists neunte Sammlung von geistlichen Liedern und ein herausragendes Dokument der fruhneuzeitlichen, auf biblische Texte des Neuen Testaments bezogenen Lyrik. Geboten werden 82 Lieder zu neutestamentlichen Basistexten sowie im Vorspann eine Widmungsvorrede an den Rat der Stadt Danzig, eine programmatische Prafation an die Leser und zahlreiche Ehrenschriften, die Rists Gelehrtennetzwerk offenlegen. Fur die Kompositionen, die als Hohepunkte musikalischer Kunstfertigkeit angesehen werden durfen, sorgte der in Luneburg an St. Lamberti tatige Organist Christian Flor.

Der alttestamentliche Teil des Seelenparadises' ist Rists achte groe Sammlung geistlicher Lieder. In seiner Prafation an den Leser legt Rist erstmals die Globalstrategie seiner geistlichen Schriftstellerei offen. Sein Ziel ist es, das Gesamte der Theologie im Medium des geistlichen Gesangs zur Darstellung zu bringen. Die Quellentexte werden durch einen textkritischen Apparat und einen reichhaltigen Stellenkommentar (Nachweis von Traditionsgut, Klarung prospographischer, bibliographischer und historischer Sachverhalte) sowie durch editorische Berichte, Nachworte und Register prazise erschlossen. Die Edition gewahrt nicht nur wichtige Einblicke in die Theologie-, Literatur- und Musikgeschichte der Barockzeit, sondern dokumentiert uberdies den spezifischen Beitrag barock-geistlicher Lyrik zur Auslegung alttestamentlicher Texte.
