Es war ein heißer Nachmittag, und an den sonnichten Waldplätzen, wo kein kühlendes Lüftchen hinkam, war es fast zum verschmachten schwühl. Ihr leichtes Strohhütchen vermochte nicht mehr den brennenden Sonnenstrahlen zu wehren. Die hellen Schweißtropfen standen ihr beständig auf der Stirne, und ihre Wangen waren wie Glut. Dennoch pflückte sie, ohne aufzusehen, emsig fort. ¿Denn, sagte sie freudig, indem sie mit ihrem weißen Tuche den Schweiß abwischte, es ist ja für meine kranke Mutter. Das Geld, das ich aus den Beeren erlöse, verschafft ihr doch wieder eine kleine Erquickung!¿Gegen Abend ging sie, mit ihrem Körbchen voll Beeren am Arme, durch den Wald nach Hause. Sie suchte sich, fern von den hohen Bäumen, unter niedrigen Haselstauden ein sicheres Plätzchen, stand hier unter, und wartete, bis das Gewitter vorüber wäre.
