Elisha is unique. No prophet performed as many miracles as he did, in such an unusual manner, and with such ease. Elisha is not a magician who carries out all sorts of tricks with the sole purpose of stunning his audience, but an exceptional prophet, bestowed with a double portion of God's spirit. His ministry brings new hope to the sick, the oppressed, and the poor of all nations. The mysteries surrounding this prophet are numerous, but they are solved when the stories are read in the light of Jesus Christ. Elisha announces the Messiah, particularly his grace, his perfection, and the sovereignty of his ministry. To read these eight chapters of 1-2 Kings in the light of Jesus Christ stimulates our faith, renews our intelligence, and allows us to glimpse into the startling depth of Holy Scripture.

The book of Esther helps the believer live in the secular world where power, racism, and sexism crush any hope of freedom and liberation. How do we outlive oppression? How can we refuse the unacceptable without being immediately rejected? Confronted by the genocide of their people, Esther and Mordecai stayed lucid; in faith and with courage and integrity, they used the opportunities God laid before them. This commentary analyses each chapter in the light of the whole book. Esther's strategy to undo the irrevocable deadly decree is carefully analysed and will stimulate our wisdom. The wise know the difference between patience and passivity, diligence and precipitation, controlled temperament and explosive contestation. With skill, Esther uses her charm and femininity to master an irresponsible king

  • - Bible Commentary 1 Kings 17 - 2 Kings 2
    af Daniel Arnold

How do judgement and grace interrelate? The eight chapters of 1-2 Kings dedicated to Elijah's ministry revolve around the theme of immediate and distant retribution. This commentary explains how Elijah's ministry highlights God's patience during the unique time of Israel's monarchy (1-2 Kings). It explains and justifies "the theology of postponement". It draws attention to the literary features of the text and uses the narrative characteristics of the stories to underline the author's main message. Elijah is known for his courage at Mt Carmel and his perseverance in prayer; but also for his fear before Jezebel, and his depression after failure. He is the first man implicated in a resurrection and the second to be raptured to heaven. Essentially, Elijah is the prophet of judgement but during his life he had to learn more about God's mercy.

  • - A Study of Parallelisms and Progressions as Means of Communication
    af Daniel Arnold

Daniel's structure is a puzzle. The work is written in two languages that divide the book into three parts (Da 1; 2-7; 8-12); there are also two genres (narrative and apocalyptic) that divide the book into two parts that do not correspond to the language structure (Da 1-6; 7-12). Moreover, the narrative section describes the integration of faithful believers with pagan powers, but the apocalyptic section is generally understood to support resistance and opposition to the occupant. How do we account for the signs of unity and diversity, and what message is conveyed through the complex structure(s)? This thesis analyses Daniel from the perspective of parallelism and duality, which are basic paradigms of Hebrew communication. Three global structures (linguistic, genre, and era) are developed and supported with literary arguments. Justification for complementary perspectives is offered. The case for the book's unity is further strengthened by links tying each chapter to the preceding one. On a different level, the book's oneness (unity/completeness) is supported by the meticulous selectivity of specific items: proper names and chronological references form many dualities (pairs), quartets, and groups of seven. Duality is also present at the level of the book's themes, and helps to express diversity. Three main themes (time, revelation, and redemption) present contrasting sides: (1) present vs. end-time perspective, and prolonged sequences vs. limited time durations; (2) revelation given to pagans vs. mysteries kept for future believers; (3) salvation from present trials vs. suffering from final persecution, and delayed judgments vs. final judgments. Comparisons of various building blocks and theme references show progressions that run through the book, thus adding dynamism to unity and diversity. The seven visions reveal a progression in clarity and animation; and oppression to God and the faithful is expressed through the progressive hardening of kings, court officials, and evil kingdoms. The final step of the comparative exegetical approach analyses Daniel from the perspective of the canon. Four antithetical perspectives are suggested: the Babel story, Joseph the patriarch, Ezekiel the contemporary exilic prophet, and the book of Revelation. A review chart of structures, insights into Daniel's central message, and a few comments on authorship, historicity, and eschatology conclude the study.

The characters of the judges are colourful, dramatic, and often misunderstood. Should Samson be admired or despised? Each judge poses problems because the author is contented with merely narrating the facts. Generally commentators evaluate these men negatively, yet the New Testament includes the most criticized judges amongst the heroes of faith (Heb 11:32). This commentary defends a very positive view of the judges. It analyses the book as a whole and points to various clues left by the inspired author to read positively the behaviour of these military leaders. Gideon, Jephthah, and Samson are models of spirituality.

  • - Commentary on the book of Jonah
    af Daniel Arnold
    182,95 kr.

Jonah is a fascinating book. It takes only ten minutes to read, but ten years of study cannot explain all of the questions it raises. The prophet is often criticised by preachers and scholars alike. They describe him as chauvinistic and narrow-minded. This commentary takes a much more positive view of the man. Jonah was probably the best man of his generation. His understanding of God is exceptional. If so, why did he travel in the opposite direction from his mission field? This commentary brings new insights into the conflict-laden relationship between God and his prophet. Since actions speak louder than words, God and his prophet communicate non-verbally. Jonah is stubborn in his refusal to accomplish his mission, but God is resolute to extend his grace to bloodthirsty pagans, and he will use wind, whale, and worm to convince his reluctant prophet. On a global level (intertextuality), the story of Jonah is an anti-flood story. God reverses the judgement that struck the ancient world. Through Jonah, God announces a salvation for all mankind that finds its full expression in Jesus-Christ. Dr Arnold presents a thorough defence of the account's historicity. He also draws attention to the many literary characteristics of the book. Jonah is a simple narrative, and yet a complex, dynamic, and intriguing story. Certain events are surrealistic and the book's characters are atypical. The commentary is based on thorough research. It is written in a pleasant style and brings a fresh approach to the book of Jonah.

• - A Vagabond Journey from Death Valley to Mount Whitney
    af Daniel Arnold
    163,95 kr.

From the depths of Death Valley, Daniel Arnold set out to reach Mount Whitney in a way no road or trail could take him. Anything manmade or designed to make travel easy was out. With a backpack full of empty two–liter bottles, and the remotest corners of desert before him, he began his toughest test yet of physical and mental endurance.Badwater Basin sits 282 feet below sea level in Death Valley, the lowest and hottest place in the Western Hemisphere. Mount Whitney rises 14,505 feet above sea level, the highest point in the contiguous United States. Arnold spent seventeen days traveling a roundabout route from one to the other, traversing salt flats, scaling dunes, and sinking into slot canyons. Aside from bighorn sheep and a phantom mountain lion, his only companions were ghosts of the dreamers and misfits who first dared into this unknown territory. He walked in the footsteps of William Manly, who rescued the last of the forty–niners from the bottom of Death Valley; tracked John LeMoigne, a prospector who died in the sand with his burros; and relived the tales of Mary Austin, who learned the secret trails of the Shoshone Indians. This is their story too, as much as it is a history of salt and water and of the places they collide and disappear.Guiding the reader up treacherous climbs and through burning sands, Arnold captures the dramatic landscapes as only he can with photographs to bring it all to life. From the salt to the summit, this is an epic journey across America's most legendary desert.

  • - Encounters with Legendary Mountaineers
    af Daniel Arnold
    262,95 kr.

It's 1873. Modern climbing gear and Gore-Tex shells are a century away, but the high mountains still demand your attention. Imagine the stone in your hands and thousands of feet of open air below you, with only a wool jacket to weather a storm and no rope to catch a fall. Daniel Arnold did more than imagine--he spent four years retracing the precarious steps of his climbing forefathers and lived to tell their tales here. From 1864 to 1931, the Sierra Nevada witnessed some of the most audacious climbing of all time. In the spirit of his predecessors, Arnold carried only rudimentary equipment--no ropes, no harness, no specialized climbing shoes. In an artful blend of history, biography, nature, and adventure writing, Arnold brings to life both the journeys and the stunning terrain. In the process he uncovers the motivations that drove an extraordinary group of individuals to risk so much for the summits of our most fabled landscapes.
