Soaring global economies created thousands of new millionaires, but this explosion of wealth attracted more than fame; the extortionist leech slithered closely behind. These parasites were tech savvy and adept at tracking their prey through the social media. Their target's behaviors were studied, vulnerabilities identified, evidence was fabricated, and the attack began. The primitive shakedown had evolved into a profitable cottage industry managed by lawyers whose ethics fit neatly in a flea's navel. In one week, James Kaplan had appeared on the cover of Forbes magazine, and then was battered in the national media by detailed allegations of sexual misconduct made by two former employees. Their lawyer assumed that his barbarous reputation would cause Kaplan to settle quickly, but he'd underestimated his victim. Kaplan reached out for help from an old friend who was skilled in the tactics of intense, bare-knuckled litigation; he called Christopher Garcia, and the game was on.

Trouble attracted the Old Dogs, and trouble's victims sought them out when all other avenues to justice were blocked. Times may have changed, but man's ability to inflict harm on the Earth and its residents remained a constant. The two surviving Old Dogs faced down a cold-blooded creature in the southern Gulf of Mexico who felt only two emotions: hatred and despair. In the process, Old Dogs Christopher Garcia and Frank James discovered how piracy, long romanticized in Hollywood, evolved into a criminal enterprise, characterized by ultraviolence, fueled by impunity, insensitivity and indifference. Soon enough, these modern-day buccaneers would learn a hard lesson: "Justice may be slow, but it's inevitable."
The Natural History of Religion is a classic religious history text by by David Hume. In this essay, Hume offers a pioneering naturalist account of the causes, effects, and historical development of religious belief. Hume argues that a crude polytheism was the earliest religion of mankind and locates the origins of religion in emotion, particularly hope, fear, and the desire to control the future. He further argues that monotheism arises from competition between religions, as believers seek to distinguish their deities as superior to all rivals, magnifying those deities until they possess all perfections. Though an enlightened monotheism is more rationally defensible than a superstitious polytheism, in practice polytheism has many advantages. In particular, Hume argues, monotheistic religions tend to be more intolerant and hypocritical, result in greater intellectual absurdities, and foster socially undesirable "monkish virtues," such as mortification, abasement, and passive suffering.

It is difficult for a man to speak long of himself without vanity; therefore, I shall be short. It may be thought an instance of vanity that I pretend at all to write my life; but this Narrative shall contain little more than the History of my Writings; as, indeed, almost all my life has been spent in literary pursuits and occupations. The first success of most of my writings was not such as to be an object of vanity. I was born the 26th of April 1711, old style, at Edinburgh. I was of a good family, both by father and mother: my father's family is a branch of the Earl of Home's, or Hume's; and my ancestors had been proprietors of the estate, which my brother possesses, for several generations. My mother was daughter of Sir David Falconer, President of the College of Justice: the title of Lord Halkerton came by succession to her brother.
