The Haunted Woman (1922) is a fantasy novel by David Lindsay. Following the commercial failure of his critically acclaimed novel A Voyage to Arcturus (1920), Lindsay hoped to achieve financial stability with a more conventional tale of suspense and the occult. Although he once more failed to reach a popular audience, Lindsay produced a powerful story of alternate worlds, the burden of convention, and the nature of human desire. The Tay Son Rebellion covers a major civil war in Vietnam. The country had been divided into north and south for 150 years: the Trinh dynasty in the north, and the Nguyen dynasty in the South. Both dynasties allowed corruption to grow, and their people suffered. The three Ho brothers started a peasant uprising in the center, in Tay Son, and eventually defeated both warlords. They let a young Nguyen prince escape, and he is helped by a French Catholic Bishop, who raises a small French Navy in India to help the young Prince Nguyen Anh attack the Ho brothers. David Lindsay, researching old records to learn details of the life of his ancestor, Richard More, soon found himself in the position of the Sorcerer's Apprentice-wherever he looked for one item, ten more appeared. What he found illuminated not only More's own life but painted a clear and satisfying picture of the way the First Comers, Saints and Strangers alike, set off for the new land, suffered the voyage on the Mayflower, and put down their roots to thrive on our continent's northeastern shore. From the story, Richard emerges as a man of questionable morals, much enterprise, and a good deal of old-fashioned pluck, a combination that could get him into trouble-and often did. He lived to father several children, to see, near the end of his life, a friend executed as a witch in Salem, and to be read out of the church for unseemly behavior. Mayflower Bastard lets readers see history in a new light by turning an important episode into a personal experience.

On the surface, Sphinx tells of the arrival into a polite and fashionable 1920's rural community of one Nicholas Cabot, a young man who has recently come into money. Nicholas Cabot, 25 years old and newly endowed with his uncle's fortune, takes lodgings at the house of retired tragedian Leslie Sturt, intending to devote his time to perfecting an invention for recording dreams.At the Sturt household, Nicholas hears "Sphinx", a short piece of piano music by local composer Lore Jensen.
