A stage play in two acts.It is the end of days, Dublin City. On the Liffey wharf, a rag-tag collection of survivors hatch a plan to escape the encroaching winter. With food and fuel in short supply and drugs and booze to keep them warm, they must find a boat and sail away, or surely perish. First written and performed by Company D Theatre in 2008, The Ending is a blistering and satirical commentary on the early days of the desperate economic recession gripping Ireland at the time.www.davidscott.ie

¿ A comprehensive journey through the history of iron¿ Aims to become a main reference text on this subject¿ Of interest to enthusiasts of anthropology, iron-age and artThis book will be of interest to all who seek to further their understanding of iron artefacts: their corrosion, conservation, and pigments based on iron compounds, which mankind has used for millennia. The authors take the reader through some of the latest observations on the occurrence and role of compounds of iron - from the hot water undersea vents where the presence of iron pyrites is thought to be vital to the emergence of life on Earth, to the discovery of jarosite on the surface of Mars, possibly indicating the presence of water; from the pyrophoric surprises one can have when dealing with iron artefacts taken from beneath the sea to the use of a blue oxide of iron as a pigment in mediaeval wall paintings; from rusticles on the Titanic to the analysis of coloring matter on the Turin shroud. The great variety of iron compounds is examined (from the simple oxides to the exotic green rusts, from Prussian blue to yellow jarosites), the corrosion of iron in different environments is discussed and a critical review of the many attempts to conserve iron is presented. This volume will serve as a useful textbook on the subject for many years.
For more than three decades, Talal Asad has been engaged in a distinctive critical exploration of the conceptual assumptions that govern the West's knowledges--especially its disciplinary and disciplining knowledges--of the non-Western world. The essays that make up this volume treat diverse aspects of this remarkable body of work. Among them: the relationship between colonial power and academic knowledge; the historical shifts giving shape to the complexly interrelated categories of the secular and the religious, and the significance of these shifts in the emergence of modern Europe; and aspects of human embodiment, including some of the various ways that pain, emotion, embodied aptitude, and the senses connect with and structure cultural practices. While the specific themes and arguments addressed by the individual contributors range widely, the essays cohere in a shared orientation of both critical engagement and productive extension. Note that this is not a festschrift, nor a celebratory farewell, but a series of engagements with a thinker whose work is in full spate and deserves to be far better known and understood.
Between Friends explores, in thirty-six texts, friendship in the modern world across a range of scenarios. Several texts investigate the special nature of male sporting affinities while others reveal the pleasures and disappointments of friendships with literary writers. The collection's concern with the neuroses of masculinity is evident in ten vignettes devoted to male clothing, bodily adornment or sports equipment. The last six stories, mostly based on archival photographs, imagine scenarios of extreme male anguish or difficulty. Overall the collection is a provocative psychological study of sometimes unconventional relationships which takes readers to a new level of understanding of the bonds between individuals. A particular strength of the work is its vivid powers of evocation - of scenarios, events and relationships - and its witty and often humorous expression of the significance of the situations recounted. Ranging over a wide spectrum of social and sporting subjects and interactions - from boxing to fashion, from the gym to home situation, from war to peace, from exotic places to familiar environments - the stories' varied styles and forms aim to capture the particular flavour of the experiences recounted.
