Each puzzle consists of a 8x8 grid containing given clues in various places. The object is to fill all empty squares so that the numbers 1 to 8 appear exactly once in each row, column, diagonal and 4x2 box.
Akari (Light Up) is played on a rectangular grid of white and black cells. The player places light bulbs in white cells such that no two bulbs shine on each other, until the entire grid is lit up. A bulb sends rays of light horizontally and vertically, illuminating its entire row and column unless its light is blocked by a black cell. A black cell may have a number on it from 0 to 4, indicating how many bulbs must be placed adjacent to its four sides; for example, a cell with a 4 must have four bulbs around it, one on each side, and a cell with a 0 cannot have a bulb next to any of its sides. An unnumbered black cell may have any number of light bulbs adjacent to it, or none. Bulbs placed diagonally adjacent to a numbered cell do not contribute to the bulb count.

While titled Biography of Rev. David Smith (1881), the main portion of this work contains Smith's autobiography. This autobiography is followed by a brief history of Wilberforce University by Daniel Alexander Payne (1811-1893), who was an African- American educator and minister and who became Wilberforce University's president in 1863. He also served as chancellor and dean of its theological school from 1876 until his death. Payne was a forceful supporter of education within the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church and an effective proponent for reforming and standardizing the course of study for AME ministers, which was accepted by the General Conference in 1844. He became an AME bishop and held the position for 41 years.
