Écrit vers l'an 1772, ce texte fut publié pour la première fois en 1798 sous le titre "Sur l'inconséquence du jugement public de nos actions particulières" . C'est sous ce titre qu'il figure dans l'édition Assézat-Tourneux des Oeuvres complètes de Diderot, mais une copie de ce morceau porte le titre Mme de La Carlière, conte.

Der Diener Jakob und sein adeliger Herr, der im Roman nicht mit Namen genannt wird, reisen neun Tage lang durch Frankreich. Zur Unterhaltung tauschen sie Anekdoten aus, diskutieren über philosophische Fragen, über die Willensfreiheit und über Vorherbestimmung, und Jakob erzählt seine Liebesgeschichte. Dabei wird er immer wieder durch unglückliche Ereignisse unterbrochen, die Anlass zu neuen Geschichten bieten, die von Zufallsbekannten erzählt werden, die ihrerseits von unvorhergesehenen Ereignissen unterbrochen werden. Zusätzlich räsoniert der Erzähler über die Möglichkeiten, die er habe, um die Handlung des Romans zu verändern, reiht Stichpunkte auf, wie er Ereignisse in eine andere Richtung lenken könnte, und er verwickelt schließlich den fiktiven Leser in Diskussionen über den Roman, dessen Protagonisten etc.

Pour combler l'ennui, il promet à son maître de lui raconter la suite de ses aventures amoureuses. Mais ce récit est sans cesse interrompu soit par son maître, soit par des interventions ou incidents extérieurs, soit par des histoires autonomes venant se substituer au récit initial, soit par des discussions entre le narrateur et le lecteur.

Denis Diderot (1713-1784), ne a Langres, est un ecrivain, philosophe et encyclopediste francais. Diderot fut un des grands animateurs intellectuels du XVIIIe siecle par sa curiosite, sa vaste culture, sa connaissance des langues, son esprit critique et sa force de travail. L'annee 1743 marque egalement le debut de la carriere litteraire de Diderot, par le biais de la traduction. Il traduit The Grecian History de Temple Stanyan. En 1745 parait sa traduction, largement augmentee de ses reflexions personnelles, d' An Inquiry Concerning Virtue or Merit de Shaftesbury, sous le titre Essai sur le Merite et la Vertu, premier manifeste du glissement de Diderot de la foi chretienne vers le deisme, bientot confirme par la publication de sa premiere oeuvre originale, les Pensees Philosophiques en 1746. De 1746 a 1748, il collabore avec Marc-Antoine Eidous et Francois-Vincent Toussaint a la traduction du Medicinal Dictionnary de Robert James.

Schiller wählte eine Episode aus dem noch nicht publizierten Roman Jacques der Fatalist und sein Herr von Denis Diderot und formte daraus eine eigenständige Erzählung. In ihr geht es um eine verlassene Frau, die sich durch eine geschickt eingefädelte Intrige an ihrem ehemaligen Liebhaber rächen will, indem sie ihn in die Arme einer Prostituierten treibt. Von der Schönheit und vorgespielten Sittsamkeit der Frau hingerissen, heiratet er sie und erfährt am nächsten Tag von ihrer Vergangenheit. Die französische Erstausgabe des Romans erschien erst zwölf Jahre nach dem Tod des Verfassers in Paris und somit nach Schillers Teilübersetzung ins Deutsche. Schillers deutsche Version wiederum wurde 1793 ins Französische zurückübersetzt und eigenständig veröffentlicht.
