On lit dans la Correspondance de Grimm, mars 1771: " M. Diderot, maître coutelier à Langres, mourut en 1759, généralement regretté dans sa ville, laissant à ses enfants une fortune honnête pour son état, et une réputation de vertu et de probité désirable en tout état. Je le vis trois mois avant sa mort. En allant à Genève, au mois de mars 1759, je passai exprès par Langres, et je m'applaudirai toute ma vie d'avoir connu ce vieillard respectable. Il laissa trois enfants: un fils aîné, Denis Diderot, né en 1713, c'est notre philosophe; une fille d'un coeur excellent et d'une fermeté de caractère peu commune, qui, dès l'instant de la mort de sa mère, se consacra entièrement au service de son père et de sa maison, et refusa, par cette raison, de se marier; un fils cadet qui a pris le parti de l'Église: il est chanoine de l'église cathédrale de Langres et un des grands saints du diocèse. C'est un homme d'un esprit bizarre, d'une dévotion outrée et à qui je crois peu d'idées et de sentiments justes. Le père aimait son fils aîné d'inclination et de passion; sa fille, de reconnaissance et de tendresse; et son fils cadet, de réflexion, par respect pour l'état qu'il avait embrassé. Voilà des éclaircissements qui m'ont paru devoir précéder le morceau que vous allez lire. Le testament, si fâcheusement retrouvé, a servi de donnée à une pièce intitulée: Une Journée de Diderot, dont nous dirons quelques mois dans la Notice placée en tête du Neveu de Rameau...
Diderot interroge un aveugle-né pour savoir quelle idée éveille en lui la notion de symétrie ou encore de beauté. Il s'avère que "la beauté pour un aveugle n'est qu'un mot, quand elle est séparée de l'utilité". Toutes les réponses de l'aveugle paraissent relatives aux seuls sens dont il dispose. Les principales notions de métaphysique et de morale sont également conçues par lui d'après son expérience sensible. Ainsi, il n'y a ni bien ni mal, mais des gens qui guident les aveugles et d'autres qui les volent. Ce dialogue entre un aveugle et un voyant, restitué dans la première partie de la Lettre, a donc pour effet d'incliner le lecteur au relativisme. La seconde partie de l'ouvrage est plus subversive encore, puisque Diderot y soutient l'hypothèse d'un grand désordre universel: ce qui est ici normalité n'est-il pas ailleurs exception ? L'anomalie d'hier ne peut-elle pas devenir la règle de demain ? Diderot, radicalement matérialiste, se laisse ainsi aller sur la pente de l'athéisme et nous entraîne, jusqu'au vertige, dans le tourbillon de sa réflexion. Trop loin, sans doute, pour son époque: la Lettre paraît en juin 1749; en juillet, l'ouvrage est censuré et Diderot, emprisonné.

Paradoxe sur le comédien est un essai sur le théâtre rédigé sous forme de dialogue par Denis Diderot entre 1773 et 1777 et publié à titre posthume en 1830. Selon Diderot, qui s'oppose en cela à l'opinion générale de ses contemporains, l'acteur convaincant est celui qui est capable d'exprimer une émotion qu'il ne ressent pas. C'est le paradoxe: moins on sent, plus on fait sentir. Diderot expose deux sortes de jeux d'acteurs: (1) Jouer d'âme qui consiste à ressentir les émotions que l'on joue (2) Jouer d'intelligence qui repose sur le paraître et consiste à jouer sans ressentir. Ce paradoxe est le contraste entre l'expression du corps et l'absence d'émotion ressentie de la part de l'acteur, il joue sans éprouver. Il rit sans être gai, pleure sans être triste. L'acteur se sert de son corps comme d'un instrument. Le paradoxe du comédien met donc en évidence l'écart qui peut exister entre le corps et le psychisme (ce qui n'est pas somatique et relève de l'esprit et de l'intelligence).

'Die Nonne' (1796), von Denis Diderot, beschreibt den Leidensweg einer unfreiwilligen Nonne. Wie fast allen Werken Diderots liegt auch diesem Werke eine Thatsache zu Grunde. Im Jahre 1757 strengte eine Nonne des Klosters Longchamp einen Prozeß gegen ihre Eltern an, die sie gezwungen hatten, den Schleier zu nehmen. Der damals noch allmächtige Klerus verstand es, alle Versuche des unglücklichen Opfers, sich dem ihm aufgedrungenen Berufe zu entziehen, zu unterdrücken, und selbst der von der Unglücklichen in Scene gesetzte öffentliche Skandal hatte keine andere Wirkung, als der Ärmsten eine noch schlimmere Behandlung zu verschaffen, die in ihrer ausgesuchten Grausamkeit vor den gewagtesten Mitteln nicht zurückschreckte. Aber trotz aller Vertuschungsversuche der Geistlichkeit drang doch einiges von dem Prozeß in die Öffentlichkeit; einige wohlwollende Leute bemächtigten sich der Sache; doch all ihr Bemühen war vergeblich, die Unglückliche blieb in den Händen der Geistlichkeit.
