Diderot interroge un aveugle-né pour savoir quelle idée éveille en lui la notion de symétrie ou encore de beauté. Dans ce texte, Denis Diderot se penche sur la question de la perception visuelle, un sujet renouvelé à l'époque par le succès d'opérations chirurgicales permettant de donner la vue à certains aveugles de naissance. Les spéculations sont nombreuses en ce temps-là sur ce que la vue et l'usage qu'un individu peut en faire doivent à la seule perception, ou bien à l'habitude et l'expérience, par exemple pour se repérer dans l'espace, identifier des formes, percevoir les distances et les volumes, distinguer un tableau réaliste de la réalité. Diderot explique qu'un aveugle qui se met soudainement à voir ne comprend pas immédiatement ce qu'il voit, et qu'il mettra du temps à faire le rapport entre son expérience des formes et des distances acquises par le toucher, et les images qu'il perçoit avec son oeil.

La Promenade du sceptique ou Les Allées est une oeuvre philosophique de Denis Diderot rédigée en 1747. Il ne sera publié qu'en 1830, dans l'édition Paulin de ses OEuvres complètes. Le texte critique ouvertement le christianisme en décrivant trois Allées: (1) L'Allée des épines où se promènent les soldats de la foi et leurs victimes; (2) L'Allée des marronniers où discutent les philosophes; (3) L'Allée des fleurs, celle des plaisirs fugaces de la vie où il ne faut pas s'attarder.
Jacques, qui voyage en compagnie de son maître, possède une personnalité plus complexe que celle d'un valet de comédie: il est bavard mais aussi quelque peu philosophe ( une espèce de philosophe ) et c'est à son fatalisme qu'il doit son surnom. Pour combler l'ennui, il promet à son maître de lui raconter la suite de ses aventures amoureuses. Mais ce récit est sans cesse interrompu soit par son maître, soit par des interventions ou incidents extérieurs, soit par des histoires autonomes venant se substituer au récit initial, soit par des discussions entre le narrateur et le lecteur.
