Amongst them was John Sevier, originally Xavier from France, his father and uncle stowed away on board a ship and came to the Americas before the Revolution. John Sevier became a leading member of the new westward movement and in 1784 petitioned Congress to create the State of Franklin out of property in western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee.
