Facsimile of the 1935 Edition. The Qabalah is the traditional mystical system of Israel. It also forms the basis of medieval magic. This title deals with the work of the modern Qabalists as a contribution to the psychology of mystical experience, and also throws much light on the nature of primitive religion and the Mystery Cults. Dion Fortune's Mystical Qabalah remains a classic in the field. She explores all aspects of the Qabalah, whose disciplines include the esoteric sciences of astrology and tarot and forms the basis of the Western Mystery Tradition. Her thorough explanation of the Tree of Life, which lies at the heart of Qabalistic teaching, provides a key to the practical working of this mystical system for both novice and initiate.

Dion Fortune's first magical mentor was the Irish occultist and Freemason Theodore Moriarty. She had befriended him while still involved in psychotherapy, believing that he could help one of her patients, a young man who had been fighting on the Western Front and claimed to be plagued by unexplained physical phenomena. Moriarty performed an exorcism, claiming that the young man was the victim of the soul of a deceased East European soldier which had latched onto him as a parasite. Fortune became an acolyte of Moriarty's Masonic-influenced lodge, which was based in Hammersmith, and joined his community of followers living at Gwen Stafford-Allen's home in Bishop's Stortford. Moriarty spent much time talking about the lost city of Atlantis, a topic that would also come to be embraced by Fortune. Fortune later fictionalized Moriarty as the character Dr. Taverner, who appeared in a number of short stories first published in 1922, later assembled in a collected volume as The Secrets of Dr. Taverner in 1926. Like Moriarty, Dr. Taverner was portrayed as carrying out exorcisms to protect humans from the attacks of etheric vampires.

" It is with a sense of the seriousness of the issues involved that I set myself to the task of writing a book on psychic äack and the best methods of defence against it. ¿e undertaking is beset with pitfalls. It is hardly possible to give practical information on the methods of psychic defence without at the same time giving practical information on the methods of psychic äack. It is not without reason that initiates have always guarded their secret science behind closed doors. To disclose sufficient to be adequate without disclosing sufficient to be dangerous is my problem. But as so much has already been made known concerning the esoteric teachings, and as the circle of students of the occult is becoming rapidly wider every day, it may well be that the time has now come for plain speaking. ¿e task is not of my seeking, but as it has come into my hands, I will do my best to discharge it honourably, making available the knowledge which has come to me in the course of many years' experience of the strange by-ways of the mind which the mystic shares with the lunatic. " Applied Magic is a selection of Dion Fortune's writings on the practical applications of magical and esoteric techniques. Everyone has the ability to access the invisible planes of existence a whole kingdom of mind and spirit which cannot be perceived with the physical senses. Fortune provides invaluable guidance to anyone intent on increasing their inner awareness. She declares, Esoteric tradition admits of no exclusiveness; it is the very essence of its spirit that it blasphemes no God that has been hallowed by our devotion. It sees all religions as the expressions of our spirit rather than the personal revelation of a jealous God to His chosen people. It suffers from neither superstitious awe nor bigoted fear..."

People have been interested in secret traditions since the beginning of time. Fraternal brotherhoods and sisterhoods, and secret orders of varying degrees exist in every country, race, and religion. Dion Fortune, in Esoteric Orders and Their Work, gets to the root of exactly what esoteric orders are, leaving no stone unturned. "Esotericism, Occultism, and Mysticism" defines what esotericism is in relation to exoteriscism; in layman's terms, the inner life versus the outer one. In "The Origin of the Mysteries", she looks at how esotericism grew hand-in-hand with the evolution of humankind, discussing how humans evolved from a group soul (still present in animals today, i.e.: packs of wolves) into a singular soul. "The Paths of the Western Tradition" is a discussion on the different schools that have developed (known as Rays) and how students, after having formed a solid base of knowledge, work through each ray on their way to becoming closer to an esoteric ideal. She expounds upon Masters in "The Evolution and Functions of the Masters". We discover that they are not so much superhuman entities as beings who have learned all they need to know on the physical plane and now teach from the ethereal. Chapters such as "The Right and Left-Hand Paths" and "The Use and Power of Ritual" explain the differences between Black and White Occultism, and how long-kept-secret rituals taught only to initiates are used to further the order's members along their paths.Today, in the centers of the civilized world, there is renewed interest in esoteric schools, and although they may be misunderstood by the mainstream, some of the noblest people have been among their advocates. This book removes the shroudof mystery and fear from esotericism, and makes the Western Mystery Tradition accessible to anyone who has ever been curious about this fascinating spiritual path! Revised edition contains a new foreword by Gareth Knight, and an index.

Dion Fortune's description of Glastonbury remains one of the most evocative and poignant accounts of this wild yet holy place; a power center polarizing with distant Jerusalem and linking and harmonizing the Christian way with the primeval and pagan past of England. She describes three ways of approaching Glastonbury: by way of the legends associated with it (including early folklore, Joseph of Arimathea, the Grail, and King Arthur); through the known history of the area and its great, but never dominating influence on the history of England; and finally, through the mystical path. It is this true vision of the mystical way, encompassing all aspects of the area, both seen and unseen, which reveals Glastonbury as the Avalon of the Heart.Fortune first visited Glastonbury while Bligh Bond was still uncovering its past with his psychic investigations into the Abbey ruins. It was also there that she received her first major and dramatic Inner Plane contact in Chalice Orchard, close to Chalice Well. She later established a retreat where this first contact took place, under the shadow of the Tor. Glastonbury -- Avalon of the Heart is her personal account of the love affair with the area that repeatedly drew her back through the years.

Facsimile of 1924 Edition. Dion Fortune is justly regarded as one of the foremost occultists of modern times, an acknowledged adept whose clear, concise, and down-to-earth approach has been responsible for bringing knowledge of the occult sciences to a much wider reading public. The Esoteric Philosophy of Love and Marriage is one of her earliest books, in which she describes the occult meaning of marriage and love as manifestations of the principle of Sex or Polarity, a universal force that functions from the highest to the lowest planes of existence. Topics covered include the Ideal Marriage, the Karmic ties between souls, how souls find their mates, and the esoteric teaching concerning 'twin souls'. The book's stance on such topics as contraception, masturbation and abortion may appear puritanical to modern eyes, but Dion Fortune gives solid esoteric reasons for her statements, reasons that raise questions concerning the wisdom of today's moral relativism. A must-read for any occultist interested in one of the most fundamental aspects of life on this, and all other, planes of existence.

Facsimile of 1938 Edition. Dion Fortune is acknowledged as one of the most knowledgeable and level-headed writers on Esoteric matters. In Sane Occultism she is adamant that magic and occult studies, though often dealing with unseen forces, must still be grounded in Reason, and she explains how claims of psychic ability and past lives can, and should, be verified. The book covers a vast swathe of topics, from meditation and psychism, through numerology and astrology, to such 'black' Occult practices as psychic vampirism, blood sacrifice and other aspects of the Left-Hand Path. The need, or otherwise, for vegetarianism, strict obedience to a master, and secrecy, are also covered in detail. Sane Occultism is a refreshing, no-nonsense look at esotericism, being at the same time an excellent introduction to the subject and a book that will give even the experienced practitioner much to think about.
