Después de terminada la publicación de esta obra, he recibido de varios amigos rectificaciones de varios hechos referidos en ella. Algunas inexactitudes han debido necesariamente escaparse en un trabajo hecho de prisa, lejos del teatro de los acontecimientos, y sobre un asunto de que no se había escrito nada hasta el presente. Al coordinar entre sí sucesos que han tenido lugar en distintas y remotas provincias, y en épocas diversas, consultando un testigo ocular sobre un punto, registrando manuscritos formados a la ligera, o apelando a las propias reminiscencias, no es extraño que de vez en cuando el lector argentino eche de menos algo que él conoce, o disienta en cuanto a algún nombre propio, una fecha, cambiados o puestos fuera de lugar. Pero debo declarar que en los acontecimientos notables a que me refiero, y que sirven de base a las explicaciones que doy, hay una exactitud intachable de que responderán los documentos públicos que sobre ellos existen. Quizá haya un momento en que, desembarazado de las preocupaciones que han precipitado la redacción de esta obrita, vuelva a refundirla en un plan nuevo, desnudándola de toda digresión accidental, y apoyándola en numerosos documentos oficiales, a que sólo hago ahora una ligera referencia.

Argirópolis, escrita por Sarmiento en 1850 durante su exilio en Chile, es una obra programática que denuncia la situación de acefalía de la nación tras el fracaso de la Constitución unitaria de 1826, y propone la reorganización del territorio del antiguo Virreinato de acuerdo con los principios modernos de una república federal. Sin embargo, si atendemos a su significado "ciudad del plata" (de argyros, plata y polis, ciudad), todo en ese nombre alude a la invención. Proponemos una lectura de esta obra en una clave que conjuga esas dimensiones utópicas y programáticas en la representación de la nación cívica y la función del territorio como base de articulación de la heterogeneidad de la población devenida de la experiencia colonial.
