Cate Barratt does a good job telling the narrative, and in addition to having a voice that is extremely likable, her performance is brimming with the wit and humor that the characters she plays undoubtedly possess in abundance. For those who enjoy fun, anti-hero stories, An Amiable Charlatan is a lively read and a fantastic listen.

The narrative makes extensive use of the Battle of Jutland, which occurred at the end of May 1916. While the war was still raging in Europe, the book was released in March 1918.
