Madame de Mailly, qui n'avait pas de relations dans ce pays lointain, le remerciait, lorsque, faisant réflexion que c'était la contrée d'où venaient les plus belles fourrures, elle le priait de lui faire l'emplette d'une fourrure et de deux toiles de Perse, en lui recommandant que la fourrure et les toiles de Perse n'allassent pas audelà de six cents livres, n'étant pas assez riche pour «se payer du beau».
