Julio, el personaje principal de "El pequeño escribiente florentino", es un niño florentino, muy simpático, de cabellos rubios y tez blanca y de doce años que cursa en su momento el cuarto grado elemental. Es además el hijo mayor de un empleado de ferrocarriles quien tiene una familia numerosa. Debido al escaso sueldo de su padre, a la familia apenas le alcanza para sobrevivir a las necesidades que genera una familia numerosa. Al ver a su padre sobrecargado de trabajo por la necesidad de sostener la familia, el pequeño Julio, que vive dedicado al estudio, considera que es momento de ayudar a la economía de su casa. El riesgo de esta decisión no es solo que sus padres descubran lo que hace para aliviar el peso de la situación, sino que día tras día Julio va descuidando sus labores escolares y también su salud. Sus padres no tardan en darse cuenta de tal hecho, razón por la cual Julio tendrá que decir la verdad que ocultaba con noble esfuerzo. La historia de "El pequeño escribiente florentino", que hace parte de la obra mayor de Edmondo de Amicis, titulada "Corazón", es un cuento corto que invita a pensar sobre el significado de lo que es ser familia y en el rol que cumple cada miembro dentro de la misma.
