Il primo giorno di scuola 17, lunedì Oggi primo giorno di scuola. Passarono come un sogno quei tre mesi di vacanza in campagna! Mia madre mi condusse questa mattina alla Sezione Baretti a farmi inscrivere per la terza elementare: io pensavo alla campagna e andavo di mala voglia. Tutte le strade brulicavano di ragazzi; le due botteghe di libraio erano affollate di padri e di madri che compravano zaini, cartelle e quaderni, e davanti alla scuola s'accalcava tanta gente che il bidello e la guardia civica duravan fatica a tenere sgombra la porta. Vicino alla porta, mi sentii toccare una spalla: era il mio maestro della seconda, sempre allegro, coi suoi capelli rossi arruffati, che mi disse: - Dunque, Enrico, siamo separati per sempre? - Io lo sapevo bene; eppure mi fecero pena quelle parole. Entrammo a stento. Signore, signori, donne del popolo, operai, ufficiali, nonne, serve, tutti coi ragazzi per una mano e i libretti di promozione nell'altra, empivan la stanza d'entrata e le scale, facendo un ronzio che pareva d'entrare in un teatro. Lo rividi con piacere quel grande camerone a terreno, con le porte delle sette classi, dove passai per tre anni quasi tutti i giorni. C'era folla, le maestre andavano e venivano. La mia maestra della prima superiore mi salutò di sulla porta della classe e mi disse: - Enrico, tu vai al piano di sopra, quest'anno; non ti vedrò nemmen più passare! - e mi guardò con tristezza. Il Direttore aveva intorno delle donne tutte affannate perché non c'era più posto per i loro figliuoli, e mi parve ch'egli avesse la barba un poco più bianca che l'anno passato.

Chi guarda per la prima volta una grande carta dell'Olanda, si meraviglia che un paese così fatto possa esistere. A primo aspetto, non si saprebbe dire se ci sia più terra o più acqua, se l'Olanda appartenga più al continente che al mare. Al vedere quelle coste rotte e compresse, quei golfi profondi, quei grandi fiumi che, perduto l'aspetto di fiumi, par che portino al mare nuovi mari; e quel mare che, quasi cangiandosi in fiume, penetra nelle terre e le rompe in arcipelaghi; i laghi, le vaste paludi, i canali che s'incrociano in ogni parte, pare che un paese così screpolato debba da un momento all'altro disgregarsi e sparire. Si direbbe che non possa essere abitato che da castori e da foche, e si pensa che gli abitanti, poichè c'è gente tanto ardita da starvi, non ci debbano dormire coll'anima in pace. Pensai queste cose la prima volta che guardai una grande carta dell'Olanda, e mi venne il desiderio di sapere qualche cosa intorno alla formazione di questo singolare paese; e siccome quello che ne seppi mi determinò a fare il libro, lo scrivo qui, colla speranza che possa determinare altri a leggerlo.
È la grande piazza irregolare della Bastiglia, spettacolosa e tumultuosa, nella quale sboccano quattro boulevards e dieci vie, e da cui si sente rumoreggiar sordamente il vasto sobborgo di Sant'Antonio. Ma s'è ancora intronati dallo strepito della grande Stazione lugubre, dove s'è discesi rotti e sonnolenti; e quel vasto spazio pieno di luce, quei mille colori, la grande colonna di Luglio, gli alberi, il viavai rapidissimo delle carrozze e della folla, s'intravvedono appena.

Edmondo De Amicis (Oneglia, 21 ottobre 1846 - Bordighera, 11 marzo 1908) è stato uno scrittore e giornalista italiano. La storia è ambientata a Torino nel 1892 e narra dei tormenti del giovane Simone, perdutamente innamorato della maestra di ginnastica Maria Pedani. Lui è piccolo, timido, ex seminarista e tutt'altro che sportivo. Lei, al contrario, è forte, bella, moderna e, per i tempi, spregiudicatamente femminista.
