Eliot es im Essay Tradition and the Individual Talent vom Dichter seiner Zeit fordert, hat sie die literarischen Werke der Vergangenheit nicht vor sich auf dem Schreibtisch liegen, sie hat sie «in ihren Knochen». Bilder von Robert Herrick, Reimklänge von Marvell und Tennyson, emotionale und argumentative Rhythmen von Renaissance-Sonetten hat sie der eigenen Imagination ebenso anverwandelt wie das Lokalkolorit und das Alltagsidiom ihrer neuenglischen Heimat. Das Ergebnis ist eine Dichtung, die mit einer unverkennbaren persönlichen Stimme spricht und im Ganzen wie im Detail dem Leser zumeist unmittelbar verständlich ist, die sich aber zugleich dem traditionsbewußten Lesen auf weite literarische Welten hin öffnen kann.
