Le (chef des) Sie-yen-t¿o (Syr Tardouch) Tchen-tchou p¿i-kia (bilgä) kagan 2, sa personne est profondément brave, sa sagesse est brillamment réelle ; depuis longtemps il a vu les vicissitudes des temps ; de bonne heure il a reçu notre calendrier 3. Sa sincérité loyale et sa haute vertu ont réussi à se manifester au-delà de notre frontière. Ses tributs et ses offrandes n¿ont jamais cessé de venir au palais impérial ; de plus il a parfaitement instruit ses descendants et maintenu l¿harmonie dans son peuple ; tous à sa suite s¿acquittent des devoirs de protection qui leur incombent et tous aiment et admirent l¿influence de la cour. Ses fils Cha-tan-mi che-hou (jabgou) Pa-tcheou et Ta-tou (tardou) mo-ho-tou (bagatour) cho (chad) Hie-li-pi, ont tous deux une volonté portée sur ce qui est réellement bon, une énergie pleine d¿effective vaillance. L¿un, épuisant ses sentiments de loyalisme, chérit dans son c¿ur la cour impériale ; l¿autre venant de loin pour assister aux audiences de l¿empereur, s¿est prosterné devant son trône.

Le décor dans l¿art populaire chinois est presque toujours symbolique ; il exprime des v¿ux. Pour constater la vérité de cette proposition, il suffit de jeter les yeux sur les objets qui sont à l¿usage de tous, tels que les porcelaines, les broderies, le papier à lettres, les amulettes ; partout nous verrons se reproduire des motifs d¿ornementation qui ont un sens ; ce sens peut être plus ou moins caché, mais il importe de le découvrir si l¿on veut comprendre la raison d¿être du décor lui-même.Pour rendre notre étude plus claire, nous commencerons par analyser l¿un après l¿autre les divers procédés par lesquels l¿idée s¿exprime ; nous chercherons ensuite à énumérer et à classer ces idées elles-mêmes.Un premier mode d¿expression de l¿idée consistera à écrire purement et simplement les mots qui la signifient. L¿écriture chinoise, avec la grande élégance de ses caractères et la variété des formes qüon peut leur donner, se prête d¿ailleurs admirablement à servir d¿ornement ; nous trouvons donc de nombreux objets dans lesquels l¿écriture seule sert de décor ; tels sont ces vases sur lesquels on lit le caractère cheou ¿¿longévité¿¿, répété cent fois, sous des formes cent fois différentes.

" Dans un livre intitulé : « Documents sur les Tou-kiue (Turcs) occidentaux », publié en 1903 par l¿Académie des Sciences de Saint-Pétersbourg, j¿ai eu l¿occasion de citer quelques extraits de la grande encyclopédie Tch¿e fou yuen koei rédigée vers l¿an 1013 par une commission de lettrés. Il m¿a paru utile de compléter ce travail en traduisant tous les textes qui, dans cette encyclopédie, peuvent intéresser l¿histoire des Tou-kiue occidentaux. Tel est l¿objet du présent article." Édouard Chavannes1, né à Lyon le 5 octobre 1865 et mort à Paris le 29 janvier 1918, est un archéologue et sinologue français. Érudit prolifique et influent, Chavannes fut l¿un des sinologues les plus accomplis de l¿ère moderne et, malgré son décès relativement précoce en 1918 à l'âge de 52 ans, est le digne successeur des grands noms de la sinologie française du xixe siècle, tels que Jean-Pierre Abel-Rémusat et Stanislas Julien. C'est en grande partie grâce à son travail que la sinologie est devenue une discipline respectée au sein des sciences humaines françaises.
