Depuis le commencement du siècle, les études dantesques n'ont jamais été poussées par les érudits italiens avec autant d'activité qu'en ce moment: la récente création de deux nouvelles chaires de Dante, à Rome et à Naples, leur a donné un nouvel élan, et pendant ces dernières années, il ne s'est guère passé de semaine qui n'ait vu paraître quelque monographie, quelque commentaire ou quelque volume d'Essais exclusivement consacré à l'explication des difficultés de la Divine comédie ou de l'histoire de son auteur. Le caractère général de ces nombreux travaux diffère sensiblement des travaux accomplis jusqu'alors sur le même sujet.
