In the year 1920, the student and the statesman saw many indications that the social, financial and industrial troubles that had vexed the United States of America for so long a time were about to culminate in civil war. Wealth had grown so strong, that the few were about to strangle the many, and among the great masses of the people, there was sullen and rebellious discontent. The laborer in the cities, the producer on the farm, the merchant, the professional man and all save organized capital and its satellites, saw a gloomy and hopeless future. With these conditions prevailing, the graduation exercises of the class of 1920 of the National Military Academy at West Point, held for many a foreboding promise of momentous changes, but the 12th of June found the usual gay scene at the great institution overlooking the Hudson. The President of the Republic, his Secretary of War and many other distinguished guests were there to do honor to the occasion, together with friends, relatives and admirers of the young men who were being sent out to the ultimate leadership of the Nation's Army. The scene had all the usual charm of West Point graduations, and the usual intoxicating atmosphere of military display.

1926. From the diary of Edward Mandell House, the self-styled Colonel House (colonel in nickname only), who served as President Woodrow Wilson's closest confidant during the four years of the First World War. By reading the House diary, one becomes a witness to one of the most exciting periods in history. To Colonel House, the election of President Wilson heralded the dawn of a new age of progress and reform. The advent of World War I brought a halt to his domestic program, but enlarged House's sphere of observation and contacts. Peacemaking brought him into contact with the leaders of virtually every country in the world. Kings, presidents, and leaders of new movements come vividly to life with House's words.

Col. Edward Mandell House tried to remain anonymous, but eventually his vision of America, as represented in his novel "Philip Dru: Administrator" became known. Why anonymous? Perhaps because it conveyed precisely what one of his critics said, "Suffice it to know Philip Dru is an autobiography of the colonel himself and solves the conundrum how to get rid of the Constitution." Given House's close working relationship with President Woodrow Wilson and Wilson's own strained relationship with the foundational document of the country, bravely testifying to one's actual views is manifestly politically unwise. Especially when that vision cheers on a progressive-led civil war in America to root out and destroy completely the rugged 'reactionary' revolutionists preventing the arrival of The Administrative State: Utopia. In view of continued progressive disdain for ordinary Americans and the Constitution--which stands in their way today, as it stood in Wilson's way--"Philip Dru: Administrator" provides an important glimpse into the Bureaucratic mind, free from constraints, and allowed to dream big. May it never be free from constraints.

Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work.We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs.
