One of the essential pillars of Yiddish literature since its beginnings in the 13th century has been translation. In the 20th century, the desire to belong to world literature stimulated Yiddish intellectuals to translate works of foreign literature into Yiddish - in a brilliant display of literary force. With a focus on Yiddish cultural spaces in the Soviet Union and Poland, the present volume is devoted to the transnational and 'translational' state of Yiddish literature in various places and periods. Alongside reflections on the craft of translation, the volume includes accounts of literary translations and the practices of self-translation and collective, intermedial and cultural translation. Twelve scholarly contributions illuminate the function and meaning of translation for this minority language as a Jewish national language and for Yiddish literature as world literature.

Mit Band 6 präsentiert die Jiddistik-Reihe erstmalig eine umfangreiche Sammlung von Essays jiddischer Kulturschaffender der Zwischenkriegszeit, darunter Perets Markish, Nakhmen Meisel, Shmuel Niger, Melekh Ravitch, Fradl Shtok und Debora Vogel. Schwerpunkte sind Manifeste von Literaten und bildenden Künstlern und Diskurse zu Perspektiven moderner Autorinnen und Autoren und deren Positionierung in der Weltliteratur. Dazu gehört auch der sogenannte Sprachenkampf zwischen Hebräisch und Jiddisch als Kultur- und Nationalsprachen. Der Band umfasst ferner die Debatte um die Ausrichtung eines Literaturkongresses (1927) zur Stärkung der fragmentierten jiddischen Kulturgemeinschaft. Ein gesondertes Kapitel ist Essays der Dichterin und Erzählerin Kadya Molodowsky gewidmet, die als langjährige Herausgeberin der literarischen Zeitschrift Svive [Umfeld] eine Ausnahme bildete. Die Textedition umfasst knapp 60 jiddische Essays. Sie erscheint hebräischschriftlich, begleitet von einem Vorwort auch auf Englisch und Deutsch.

Mit dem dritten Band der Schriftenreihe Jiddistik: Edition & Forschung liegt der vollständige Erzählungszyklus Eisenbahngeschichten von Scholem Alejchem (1859¿1916) nun erstmals zweisprachig, jiddisch und deutsch, vor.
