They were promised a great adventure. That was one word for it. As Liverpool was being constantly bombed by Nazi war planes, 13-year old Lizzie and her 9-year brother, Colin, were beginning their "great adventure" to Canada for their safety. They had to leave their mum, and everyone they knew behind for the promises of the Canadian Rockies and cowboys and indians, something Colin was especially excited for. The crossing was quite the adventure as they passed through U-boat infested waters and storms with dangerously high waves. Upon their arrival in Halifax, they quickly learned that had been the easy part, and how easily promises could be broken.
Helen Campbell is the eldest and most practical of three sisters, daughters of hard-working Irish emigrants living in New York City in the 1950s. She does what she can to keep the wild-child middle sister, Carolyn, in line and support the youngest, Peggy, as she pursues her dreams of becoming a doctor. Then Helen meets Charlie. While its love at first sight for those two, Carolyn's antics threatens to derail all the sisters' future happiness. However, through thick and thin, the three sisters strive to prevail, though not necessarily in the ways they thought they wanted.
