Dans le genre plaisant comme dans le genre terrible, sa figure est celle qui domine tout; c'est le pivot du drame. Le diable est de toute éternité, chez nous, le personnage effrayant ou le personnage risible, comme le mari en France ! - C'est même une assez curieuse étude que celle de cette vieille haine chrétienne contre l'ange des ténèbres, haine qui prend tour à tour la forme de la malédiction ou celle de la raillerie, mais qui toujours exprime une même horreur pour le symbole du mai. Lorsque les sociétés civilisées en sont arrivées à ne rire que de l'inusité des formes, de l'extérieur, de tout ce qui se désigne sous le nom de ridicules, il est curieux de voir un peuple encore assez naïf pour trouver le mal risible, par cela seul qu'il est le mal, et pour sentir que le ridicule véritable n'est autre chose que le méchant, de même que le beau n'est autre chose que le bon.
