Le héros, Serge Mouret, est le fils de François Mouret et de Marthe Rougon, personnages principaux du précédent roman. Émile Édouard Charles Antoine Zola naît rue Saint-Joseph à Paris le 2 avril 1840 d'un père italien et d'une mère française. Il est le fils unique de François Zola, natif de Venise, et d'Émilie Aubert, native de Dourdan. Son père, ingénieur de travaux publics, ancien officier subalterne italien, soumissionne la construction d'un système d'amenée d'eau potable à Aix-en-Provence. Il crée avec des partenaires financiers la société du canal Zola. Il meurt de pneumonie en 1847. Émilie Aubert, sa mère, totalement démunie, s'occupe de l'orphelin avec la grand-mère de l'enfant, Henriette Aubert. Restée proche de son fils jusqu'à sa mort en 1880, elle a fortement influencé son oeuvre et sa vie quotidienne.

Eugène Rougon est le fils aîné de Pierre et Félicité Rougon. Dans les romans La Fortune des Rougon, La Curée et La Conquête de Plassans, son ascension politique a été décrite indirectement: depuis Paris, la capitale, il a permis à ses parents de s'emparer du devant de la scène politique à Plassans, sa ville natale (La Fortune des Rougon) et à son frère, Aristide Saccard, de s'enrichir par la spéculation immobilière à Paris (La Curée); par l'intermédiaire de l'abbé Faujas, il a fait en sorte que Plassans repasse politiquement du côté du pouvoir en place (La Conquête de Plassans). At nine o'clock in the evening the body of the house at the Theatres des Varietes was still all but empty. A few individuals, it is true, were sitting quietly waiting in the balcony and stalls, but these were lost, as it were, among the ranges of seats whose coverings of cardinal velvet loomed in the subdued light of the dimly burning luster. A shadow enveloped the great red splash of the curtain, and not a sound came from the stage, the unlit footlights, the scattered desks of the orchestra. It was only high overhead in the third gallery, round the domed ceiling where nude females and children flew in heavens which had turned green in the gaslight, that calls and laughter were audible above a continuous hubbub of voices, and heads in women's and workmen's caps were ranged, row above row, under the wide-vaulted bays with their gilt-surrounding adornments.

In the heat of the glowing July afternoon, the room, with blinds carefully closed, was full of a great calm. From the three windows, through the cracks of the old wooden shutters, came only a few scattered sunbeams which, in the midst of the obscurity, made a soft brightness that bathed surrounding objects in a diffused and tender light. It was cool here in comparison with the overpowering heat that was felt outside, under the fierce rays of the sun that blazed upon the front of the house. Standing before the press which faced the windows, Dr. Pascal was looking for a paper that he had come in search of. With doors wide open, this immense press of carved oak, adorned with strong and handsome mountings of metal, dating from the last century, displayed within its capacious depths an extraordinary collection of papers and manuscripts of all sorts, piled up in confusion and filling every shelf to overflowing. For more than thirty years the doctor had thrown into it every page he wrote, from brief notes to the complete texts of his great works on heredity. Thus it was that his searches here were not always easy. He rummaged patiently among the papers, and when he at last found the one he was looking for, he smiled. For an instant longer he remained near the bookcase, reading the note by a golden sunbeam that came to him from the middle window. He himself, in this dawnlike light, appeared, with his snow-white hair and beard, strong and vigorous; although he was near sixty, his color was so fresh, his features were so finely cut, his eyes were still so clear, and he had so youthful an air that one might have taken him, in his close-fitting, maroon velvet jacket, for a young man with powdered hair. "Here, Clotilde," he said at last, "you will copy this note. Ramond would never be able to decipher my diabolical writing." And he crossed the room and laid the paper beside the young girl, who stood working at a high desk in the embrasure of the window to the right.

originally published in 1871, is the first novel in Émile Zola's monumental twenty-volume series Les Rougon-Macquart. The novel is partly an origin story, with a huge cast of characters swarming around - many of whom become the central figures of later novels in the series - and partly an account of the December 1851 coup d'état that created the French Second Empire under Napoleon III as experienced in a large provincial town in southern France. The title refers not only to the "fortune" chased by protagonists Pierre and Felicité Rougon, but also to the fortunes of the various disparate family members Zola introduces, whose lives are of central importance to later books in the series.

'HIS MASTERPIECE, ' which in the original French bears the title of L'Oeuvre, is a strikingly accurate story of artistic life in Paris during the latter years of the Second Empire. Amusing at times, extremely pathetic and even painful at others, it not only contributes a necessary element to the Rougon-Macquart series of novels-a series illustrative of all phases of life in France within certain dates-but it also represents a particular period of M. Zola's own career and work. Some years, indeed, before the latter had made himself known at all widely as a novelist, he had acquired among Parisian painters and sculptors considerable notoriety as a revolutionary art critic, a fervent champion of that 'Open-air' school which came into being during the Second Empire, and which found its first real master in Edouard Manet, whose then derided works are regarded, in these later days, as masterpieces. Manet died before his genius was fully recognised; still he lived long enough to reap some measure of recognition and to see his influence triumph in more than one respect among his brother artists. Indeed, few if any painters left a stronger mark on the art of the second half of the nineteenth century than he did, even though the school, which he suggested rather than established, lapsed largely into mere impressionism-a term, by the way, which he himself coined already in 1858; for it is an error to attribute it-as is often done-to his friend and junior, Claude Monet

La Débâcle is a novel by Émile Zola published in 1892, the penultimate in les Rougon-Macquart series. The novel is by far the longest of the Rougon-Macquart series and it starts in the summer of 1870, when after serious diplomatic tensions, France has declared war on Prussia. Its main character is Jean Macquart, a farmer who after having lost his wife and land, has joined the army for the campaign of 1870. The main theme is the brutality of war for the common soldier and for the civilian population as it is hit by losses of family and friends and by economic hardship.

Obvious typographical errors have been carefully corrected and the entire text has been reset and redesigned by Adeptio Editions to enhance readability, while respecting the original edition. Zola went on to write Thérèse Raquin (1867), his first major novel, which delves into intrigue, adultery, and murder; and the dark love story Madeleine Férat (1868), his last novel before he started his masterful Rougon-Macquart 20-novel series. Zola's open letter to French president Félix Faure, under the headline J'Accuse...!, published on the front page of the newspaper L'Aurore on January 13, 1898, charging various French officials with a "terrible miscarriage of justice," reopened the case of the Jewish army officer, Captain Alfred Dreyfus, who had been sentenced to Devil's Island. For that, Zola was himself sentenced to a year in prison but fled to England, returning one year later after Dreyfus' name had been cleared. Dreyfus was eventually reinstated as an officer and publicly decorated with the Legion of Honor.

BEFORE perusing this work, it is as well that the reader should understand M. Zola's aim in writing it, and his views-as distinct from those of his characters-upon Lourdes, its Grotto, and its cures. The Dream, written by French writer Emile Zola (1840-1902) in 1888. Zola, one of the most influential writers of the literary school of naturalism and a contributor to the development of theatrical naturalism.

Nana is a novel by the French naturalist author Émile Zola. Completed in 1880, Nana is the ninth installment in the 20-volume Les Rougon-Macquart series, which was to tell "The Natural and Social History of a Family under the Second Empire." The novel was an immediate success. Le Voltaire, the French newspaper that was to publish it in installments from October 1879 on, had launched a gigantic advertising campaign, raising the curiosity of the reading public to a fever pitch. When Charpentier finally published Nana in book form in February 1880, the first edition of 55,000 copies was sold out in one day. Flaubert and Edmond de Goncourt were full of praise for Nana. On the other hand, a part of the non-reading public, spurred on by some critics, reacted to the book with outrage. While the novel is held up as a fine example of writing, it is not especially true to Zola's touted naturalist philosophy; instead, it is one of the most symbolically complex of his novels, setting it apart from the earthy "realism" of L'Assommoir or the more brutal "realism" of La Terre (1887). However, it was a great deal more authentic than most contemporary novels about the demimonde.
