Der Philosoph Ernst Cassirer (1874 - 1945) "wird einerseits dem naturwissenschaftlich orientierten Neukantianismus der Marburger Schule zugeordnet. Über die Kategorie der symbolischen Formen und Themen der Sprachphilosophie nahm Cassirer aber auch genuine Denkströmungen des 20. Jahrhunderts auf und formulierte eine eigenständige Kulturphilosophie." (Wikipedia) In dem hier vorliegenden Werk will der Autor das Wesen des deutschen Geistes in seinem Spannungsverhältnis zwischen Freiheit und Form nicht bloß als abstrakte Formel, sondern vielmehr "in den 'Taten und Leiden' der deutschen Geistesgeschichte selbst zur mittelbaren Darstellung" bringen. (Vorwort) Dies behandelt er in den folgenden Kapiteln: Leibniz - Die Entdeckung der ästhetischen Formenwelt - Die Freiheitsidee im System des kritischen Idealismus - Goethe - Schiller - Freiheitsidee und Staatsidee. Nachdruck der zweiten Auflage in Frakturschrift aus dem Jahr 1918.

Ernst Cassirer (1874-1945) forblev hele sit liv trofast mod Kants transcendentale metode. Spørgsmålet om erkendelsens objektivitet var et konstant pejlemærke for hans omfangsrige undersøgelser. Ifølge Cassirer skal den transcendentale metode dog ikke kun ligge til grund for en kritik af den rene fornuft – og dermed være en begrundelse af matematikken og de matematiske videnskabers objektivitet.Den skal også kunne grundlægge en kulturkritik. Den skal kunne forholde sig til de symbolske former og disses erkendelse: sproget, kunsten, myten, historien osv.Cassirers værk og navnlig Om kulturvidenskabernes logik er et klart eksempel på, at en indfølende fortolkningsmetode og en bestemmende forklaringsmetode ikke udelukker, men tværtimod forudsætter hinanden.Cassier var en betydningsfuld tysk kulturfilosof. Om kulturvidenskabernes logik udkom første gang på tysk i 1961. Bogen genudgives nu i Hans Reitzels Forlags serie Klassikere.
