Ethel Lina White's 1932 classic is one of the foundation stones of the village mystery sub-genre of crime fiction. Revelling in the delicious contrast of angelic outer appearances and the wickedness behind the facade, White's novel is a witty and satisfying interwar mystery.

A millionaire family is intimidated by first abduction and death, and when their daughter is taken, at the same place, in the mysterious way, they are willing ransom victims. Good mechanics-timing make this an excellent suspense holder.

As Professor Sebastian Warren battens down the shutters and locks all the doors of their isolated country house, the eight occupants start to feel safe. Somewhere outside lurks a murderer of young girls, the latest only an earshot away. Is there really safety in numbers and what happens when their numbers start to dwindle? The novel was adapted for a radio production starring Helen Hayes, and in 1946 director Robert Siodmak took it to the big screen, under the title The Spiral Staircase.

Adapted for the screen as The Lady Vanishes by Alfred Hitchcock in 1938, Ethel Lina White's suspenseful mystery remains her best-known novel, worthy of acknowledgement as a classic of the genre in its own right.
