Excerpt from Rosa Mundi and Other Stories Was the water blue, or was it purple that day? Randal Courteney stretched his lazy length on the shady side of the great natural breakwater that protected Hurley Bay from the Atlantic rollers, and wondered. It was a day in late September, but the warmth Of it was as a dream of summer returned. The season was nearly over, or he had not betaken himself thither, but the spell Of heat had prolonged it unduly. It had been some thing Of a shock to him to find the place still Occupied by a buzzing crowd Of visitors. He never came to it till he judged the holidays to be practically over. For he loved it only when empty. His idea of rest was solitude. He wondered how long this pearly weather would last, and scanned the sky for a cloud. In vain! There was no cloud all round that blue horizon, and behind him the cliffs stood stark against an azure sky. Summer was lingering, and even he had not the heart to wish her gone. Biddy Maloney stood at the window of her mistress's bedroom, and surveyed the world with eyes of stern disapproval. There was nothing of the smart lady's maid about Biddy. She abominated smart lady's maids. A flyaway French cap and an apron barely reaching to the knees were to her the very essence of flighty impropriety. There was just such a creature in attendance upon Lady Grace de Vigne who occupied the best suite of rooms in the hotel, and Biddy very strongly resented her existence. In her own mind she despised her as a shameless hussy wholly devoid of all ideas of "dacency." Her resentment was partly due to the fact that the indecent one belonged to the party in possession of the best suite, which they had occupied some three weeks before Biddy and her party had appeared on the scene.

In The Safety Curtain, a young woman is dancing on stage. She is the Dragon-Fly and people have come to see her dance. There is, however, a strange and stern man in the audience that is rather frightening. And then the stage behind the Dragon-Fly is set on fire. Panic ensues and the Dragon-Fly is caught in the chaos. Fortunately, a man comes to her rescue and whisks her away to safety. But is this man as benevolent as he seems? Or does he have more sinister intentions for the Dragon-Fly? Other stories included in this collection are The Experiment, Those Who Wait, The Eleventh Hour, and The Place of Honor, all of which promise to be as spine-tingling and racy as only Ethel May Dell can write. Ethel May Dell is the author of the The Way of the Eagle, a novel that went through twenty-seven printings between 1911 and 1915.

She recalled old Mrs. Marshall's dour remarks concerning him;--"brought up by men from his cradle," brought up, moreover, by that terrible old Sir Beverley on the one hand and an irresponsible French valet on the other. She caught herself wishing that she had had the upbringing of him, and smiled again. There was a great deal of sweetness in his nature; of that she was sure, and because of it she found she could forgive his waywardness, reflecting that he had probably been mismanaged from his earliest infancy.

A Man Under Authority is a novel by Ethel M. Dell, published in the early 20th century. The story revolves around the life of a young man named Richard Garth, who is a successful businessman and a respected member of his community. Despite his achievements, Richard is haunted by his past and struggles to come to terms with his feelings of guilt and shame. When he meets a young woman named Joan, he is immediately drawn to her and begins to see her as a way to escape his troubled past. However, their relationship is complicated by the fact that Joan is engaged to another man, and Richard must decide whether to pursue his feelings for her or respect her commitment to her fianc. Along the way, Richard must confront his own demons and learn to accept himself for who he truly is. A Man Under Authority is a compelling tale of love, redemption, and self-discovery that will resonate with readers of all ages.1925. Dell, British writer, began writing at a young age. Most of her stories were ones of passion and love set in India and other British colonial possessions. The story begins: I shall certainly call upon her myself, said Mrs. Winch. And I shall advise the Vicar to do the same. I am sure he will follow your advice, said Miss Barnet rather fulsomely. Miss Barnet was always nervously fulsome in the presence of her employer. Mrs. Winch paid no attention of any sort to her-also her invariable custom. To speak to Miss Barnet was very much the same as to speak to oneself. She never disagreed and nearly always applauded.
