Eugene Field, Sr. (1850 - 1895) was an American writer, best known for his children's poetry and humorous essays. Field first started publishing poetry in 1879, when his poem "Christmas Treasures" appeared in A Little Book of Western Verse. Over a dozen volumes of poetry followed and he became well known for his light-hearted poems for children, among the most famous of which are "Wynken, Blynken, and Nod" and "The Duel" (which is perhaps better known as "The Gingham Dog and the Calico Cat"). Field also published a number of short stories, including "The Holy Cross" and "Daniel and the Devil."In this book: Love-Songs of ChildhoodA Little Book of Western VerseSongs and Other VerseSecond Book of VerseHoosier LyricsChristmas Tales and Christmas VerseThe Mouse and The Moonbeam

The determination to found a story or a series of sketches on the delights, adventures, and misadventures connected with bibliomania did not come impulsively to my brother. For many years, in short during the greater part of nearly a quarter of a century of journalistic work, he had celebrated in prose and verse, and always in his happiest and most delightful vein, the pleasures of book-hunting. Himself an indefatigable collector of books, the possessor of a library as valuable as it was interesting, a library containing volumes obtained only at the cost of great personal sacrifice, he was in the most active sympathy with the disease called bibliomania, and knew, as few comparatively poor men have known, the half-pathetic, half-humorous side of that incurable mental infirmity.

"Second Book of Verse" from Eugene Field. American writer (1850-1895).
""A Little Book of Tribune Verse"" is a collection of poems by Eugene Field, featuring a number of previously uncollected works. The poems range from serious and contemplative to lighthearted and humorous, showcasing Field's versatility as a writer. The book is a combination of both grave and gay verse, with themes including love, nature, childhood, and more. This collection offers a glimpse into the mind and talent of one of America's most beloved poets.1901. From the Introduction: It is the purpose of this volume to present to admirers of Eugene Field a collection of poems from a store wherein many of his richest gems of wit, humor, and pathos have been buried for twenty years and forgotten, save by a few of those who were his intimate associates during his career in Denver...His talent was the curious blending of the literary and journalistic instinct, but the former was manifestly in the ascendant. Many of his poems, especially those written under the influence of his newspaper environments in Denver, reflect the genuine nature of the man as he appeared in his everyday communion with the people. From whatever point of view the character of Eugene Field is seen, genius-rare and quaint presents itself is childlike simplicity. That he was a poet of keen perception, of rare discrimination, all will admit. He was a humorist as delicate and fanciful as Artemus Ward, Mark Twain, Bill Nye, James Whitcomb Riley, Opie Read, or Bret Harte in their happiest moods.
