Tourterot, vieillard de Châtellerault, voulant marier son fils, attire dans la maison M. Poupardin, membre de l'Académie d'Etampes, et propriétaire d'une fille jeune et jolie. Touterot qui, durant un court séjour qu'il fit à Paris, auprès de son fils, étudiant en médecine, a pris le langage et les habitudes du beau monde de la Chaumière, parle argot à l'académicien d'Etampes, qui ne comprend rien à cette façon de parler. Mais jugeant le garçon qu'on destine à sa fille par le père, il jure que jamais elle n'épousera un étudiant de Paris. - Heureusement celui-ci arrive; - c'est un homme comme un autre; habit noir, cravate blanche, souliers vernis. - Touterot lui-même ne reconnaît plus son fils; c'est que ce fils n'est plus un garçon qui, pour faire comme ses camarades, avait crû devoir être extravagant dans sa toilette, de mauvais goût dans son langage et ridicule en tout, mais un homme raisonnable qui s'habille et parle comme tout le monde. - Poupardin, heureusement désabusé à l'endroit du jeune Touterot, lui donne sa fille en mariage.

"Le Club champenois" est un a-propos en un acte d'Eugène Labiche, représenté pour la première fois, à Paris, sur le théâtre du Montasier (Palais-Royal), le 8 juin 1848. Juste après la Révolution de Février 1848, un maire de campagne, Pontcharrat, est sommé par le nouveau régime d'organiser dans sa commune un club démocratique. Pontcharrat prépare également le mariage de sa nièce Henriette à Gindinet, l'instituteur. Mais Henriette aime son cousin Cassagnol, un comédien, et le fait venir d'urgence. La réunion du club démocratique et la présentation des futurs candidats aux élections va donner l'occasion à Cassagnol de montrer ses talents en interprétant successivement Jean-Louis, dit le Corinthien, un ouvrier, puis le citoyen Grand-Bagout, un économiste et enfin, l'illustre général Chauvinancourt.
