Elle le menace: oeil pour oeil, dent pour dent, s'il la trompe, elle en fera de même.

Marjavel est marié en secondes noces à Hermance. Ernest, un de ses amis, tisse une relation avec Hermance. L'oncle d'Ernest, Jobelin, était quant à lui l'amant de la première femme de Marjavel, Mélanie. Et enfin, Marjavel lui-même a une relation avec une autre femme, sans compter les deux maîtresses qu'il avait quand il était marié avec Mélanie. Bien entendu, aucun des trois hommes, Ernest, Marjavel et Jobert, ne veut que les autres soient au courant. Ce que les circonstances rendent difficiles...

Aujourd'hui, monsieur Montaudoin marie sa fille Fernande à un caissier, Isidore. Cependant, le papa est anxieux, méfiant et soupçonneux. Il dévoile a un ami, Penuri, que depuis la naissance de sa fille, il y a juste vingt ans, tous les jours quelqu'un lui dérobe la somme insignifiante de 37 sous, jamais ni plus ni moins. Avec l'aide de Penuri, il veut résoudre cette énigme.
