China's pursuit of international security has increased significantly in recent years. Africa offers opportunities and challenges to achieve strategic and security goals. Political and military solidarity, the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), the party-military model, the development-security complex, capacity-building and peacekeeping missions are all dimensions of China's security involvement in Africa. The nature and scope of China's international security ambitions are enormous and the military is a tool to promote diplomacy. China-Africa military relations has changed dramatically, from support during the liberation struggle to training programs in the modern era. The attempt in this book is to cover the broad spectrum of China and African security in order to understand the relationship better.
China comes to Africa with pure trade and economical intentions, offloading Chinese products in the markets of host countries in exchange for oil and other resources. African states traditionally relied on western colonial powers for economic aid and political influence. However, with the rise of China and its increasing involvement in Africa, the situation is slowly changing. Petroleum producing states endeavor to establish relations based on the supply of oil in return for investments and other economical incentives. The US interests in Sub-Saharan Africa includes promoting democracy, good governance and transparency in economies of petroleum producing states, along with establishing a strong military command to protect its oil interests and monitor the actions of militant groups.
China's role in international peacekeeping has greatly expanded during the leadership of Hu Jintao, and China has since become a significant contributor to peacekeeping operations in Africa. The importance of the book is expressed in the view that peacekeeping intervention is a tool that strengthens policy goals in the United Nations Mission.
