Teaching Is All About the Kids . . . Except when real life gets in the way. Follow along from that first contract, when nothing is familiar, and the idea of standing in front of a 4th-grade class leaves you shaking in your boots, through campus changes, teaching the same students three years in a row, and State Legislature mandates that send everyone out of their comfort zone. If you've ever wanted to teach, or know someone who's just starting out, get them this book. Farley's story isn't just about the kids, it's about life with the kids, both inside and outside the classroom. Teaching in the public school system affects every part of his life, from dating to marriage to raising his son. It dictates where he lives and how he's treated by his neighbors. When you teach, even your vacations are intertwined with your job, and you never leave your kids behind. Even when you want to! This is the best book about what it means to be an educator that's hit the market in decades. Farley Dunn is the author of over twenty published novels. Pass the Straitjacket, Please, is his humorous (and sometimes not-so-humorous) memoir of his 35-year teaching career in his hometown. God infiltrates every part of who we are. We do not have to know him for him to be all around us. When we take a drink of water, he is in the water. In the air we breathe, we find him there, too. Imagine our children. They are us, and yet they think they are not. Yet, as parents, we never consider the gulf as great as they do. When our children hurt, we hurt. When they know success, we feel their joy. When they curse us and walk away, we want to see them come back to us once again. Ask a child who is now grown. They will tell you they are what their parents have made them, whether good or bad. How is that possible? Because as parents, we infiltrate every part of who they are. So it is with God. We can cry, "No! I am a self-made man. No supreme being formed me from the dust of the earth." And yet, we cannot escape our creator, for he infiltrates every part of who we are. When we quit running and reach out to him, we will find him in every part of every day, and in every-thing we touch at any point in time. He is there for us. He wants us to be there for him. You will find God in this book. Look for him. He's waiting for you to find him, because he loves you very much.

JUST WHO . . . OR WHAT . . . IS CAMDEN ARCHER? ONLY REAL BOYS HAVE SOULS, and if Camden's not real . . . Jake Turner doesn't even want to think about that. Camden Archer lives at the Center, along with seventeen other orphans. Jake Turner is Cam's teacher at a Denver middle school. A storm throws them together, igniting Jake's suspicions that the boy isn't what he appears to be. Cam grows an inch in one weekend, and his physical responses are too quick for Jake to follow-when the boy thinks Jake isn't watching. The clincher for Jake? When Cam recovers miraculously from a deadly car accident that Jake was certain killed the boy. Even Cam's subsequent attendance at Sacred Heart doesn't entirely convince Jake the boy is heaven-bound. Who is there to hear his confession, if he's not real? The boy's abduction, and his ensuing pursuit by the Center's highly trained team of ex-military types, pull Jake into a life-or-death quest to save the boy he's come to care about as if he were his own. In the deadly conflict that follows, Jake has to come to terms with his doubts about Cam. He also has to answer the bigger question: What does it mean to have a soul? It matters very much to Cam, especially if the boy doesn't survive long enough for Jake to save him.
Immortality, a blessing or a curse? Of course, we all want to live forever. How high of a price are we willing to pay? For Parik, the son of an ancient goddess, the price is very high, indeed. His mother, in a fit of anger, cursed him with immortality. The price he is forced to pay? Each time he is reborn, he must undergo an excruciating death. If that weren't bad enough, everyone around him must also die, so that Parik might be gifted life once again. This is the story of one of Parik's rebirths, and the tale of the people he has come to care about. They see him as a god, come to save their city. Only Parik knows the truth. Everyone will die, so that he alone can live.
In Volume 1 of God Is Hope in Our Darkness, I wrote of the blackness of despair that surrounds us. Everyone that has faced that towering monolith of defeat knows hope can be notoriously difficult to find. Even in the church, we often leave the morning service feeling as miserable as before. Even when friends and family try to encourage us, their words fall on deaf ears. The one constant that remains is the depth of our desolation, and in our pain, it is total and complete. It is easy to consider giving up, because when we are mired in our despair, we feel overwhelmed. In that moment of utter devastation, there is no light at the end of the tunnel. All doors are closed, the lights are off, and silence surrounds us. Not even God answers the cries we send heavenward. Yet, our despair is not forever, and there will be a light at the end of the tunnel. Hope will shine for us once more, and we will live again. All we need to do is hold to the truth that God is in control, and he sees our pain. He hurts for us as we hurt, and he will be there when we come out on the other side. These biblically-based essays on finding God as our hope in the darkness are built on a central theme: God never leaves us alone, no matter how dark the night becomes. Each of these essays speaks to my heart. I hope they speak to yours.
This series on faith has been especially meaningful to me. Read of the Australian Bearded Dragon and how it must bask in the sun in order to process its food. Then learn how sometimes God wants us to cut and run, for we must understand that not all battles need to be fought by us. We can find God if we search in the right places for him, and he even gives us his private GPS to help us along the way. He will lead us straight to his headwaters, and we will never thirst again. If you haven't guessed yet, I am referencing essays in this fourth volume of God Is Faith in Our Despair. I have to confess, I feel this set of essays by far surpasses those in the previous volumes. Maybe that's due to God's intimacy with me as I assembled each one. You see, when I write these, they are God speaking to me. The ones I'm working with at the moment are the ones that God punches home to me. When you read them, I hope you allow him to also speak to you through them. He wants to, you know. Our faith in God is the most important thing we can have. Money in the bank? That lake house? Our lives are certainly sweeter if we have those, but our lives are nothing without Jesus. We must hold to the important thing, and that is our faith in our Almighty God. Enjoy this book, and I hope it blesses you half as much as it has blessed me. If so, you will not be able to contain all the good things that God pours out on your spirit.
Faith. It is so important to us. Having a strong sense of faith is essential to successfully living day to day, but finding a foothold in tumultuous times can still be very difficult. What is our answer? We have to keep our eyes on Jesus. We have to remember our goal and not let the distractions of a world run amok fracture our concentration. That is easier said than done. In the summer of 2014, a couple living on Lake Whitney in Central Texas had the floor fall out from under their feet, literally. The limestone cliff on which their home was built fractured, leaving the back half of their house dangling 75 feet over the water. Where is our faith when the floor falls out from under us? How do we find God then? Or do we throw up our hands in despair, accepting that there is nothing we can do? God encourages us to keep our faith in him. Just like a child, if we trust in his goodness even when the promises don't come, we will never lose the sense of security that can only come from belief in a higher being. God is that higher being, and he treasures us. When we have faith in him, he will reciprocate our outpouring of trust, and he will be there for us every time. Even when the ground falls away underneath our feet. Let's look up. God is our safety net, and when all else falls away, his arms are there to catch us. We will find our security in him.
In my first volume of God Is Faith in Our Despair, I wrote of faith as a two-pronged fork. On one side, we have the foundational beliefs of our childhood, and when the world seems to crumble around us, we inadvertently fall back on those core beliefs. However, they don't always seem so rock-solid when the electricity has been turned off, and our broken tooth slams us with a two thousand dollar repair bill. Ouch, we cry. God, are you up there? The Word references God as our Father. A father cares for us, but a good father also allows us to grow into maturity, even if that means letting us battle our own enemies and learn how to stand up for ourselves. He knows that if he always steps in to rescue us at the start of the battle, we will be no more than a surface Christian. Scratch us, and the world will always show through. He wants so much more for us. He wants us to find our faith in him even when the storms rage and the darkness squeezes the very breath from our lungs. He wants us to know that he is always there. All we need to do is look up.
Faith can be a two-pronged fork. On one side we know what we believe. That is our faith, and it stands as a bulwark against all comers. No one can shift us from our beliefs. They are the foundation upon which our lives are built. Yet, there is another side to faith. God asks us to trust in him, and yet when the bank account runs low, we begin to panic. We get a bad oncology report, and all we can think of is that we don't have a paid-up burial plan. We know what we believe, and still, when it comes time to step across the fiery coals, doubt clouds our judgment. All we can see are the flames, and we forget how to step out on God's truth. These biblically-based essays are all about finding our faith in God even when our feet are scorched, and we think we cannot take another step. Hopefully, when you spend time with the truth as it is found in God's Word, you will realize that he has been there all along. All we need to do is look up.
