Haupttext der TG 21 mit den Veröffentlichungen von 1931 ist die Monographie "Einführung in die Soziologie"; sie stellt die letzte und gleichzeitig umfassende systematische Äußerung Tönnies' zu seinem Begriffssystem der Soziologie dar. Die anderen Stränge seines wissenschaftlichen Werks sind in kleineren Arbeiten vertreten. Von Bedeutung ist vor allem die Beschäftigung mit der werdenden empirischen Soziologie, bei Tönnies unter dem Namen "Soziographie". Von Tönnies' Beiträgen zu Vierkandts Handwörterbuch der Soziologie beansprucht "Gemeinschaft und Gesellschaft" besonderes Interesse: Freier als sonst führt er die Begriffe seiner Soziologie in der Anwendung vor. Das Jahr 1931 kennzeichnet eine Vertiefung der Wirtschaftskrise und eine politische Radikalisierung. Tönnies äußerte sich hier sowohl grundsätzlich zur politischen Strategie staatstragender Kräfte in der Krise wie auch in mehreren pointierten tagespolitischen Einwürfen. Tönnies sieht als strategische politische Aufgabe die Verteidigung der Republik und ihrer demokratischen Verfassung, er nimmt den Nationalsozialismus gleichzeitig als politische Bedrohung ernst wie er ihn in seiner Programmatik für lächerlich erklärt.
