La biographie dont je vais donner lecture est d'une longueur inusitée, malgré les nombreuses coupures que j'y ai faites ce matin même. Je pourrais, pour m'excuser, dire que Gay-Lussac n'était pas un académicien ordinaire, qu'il occupera une place très-éminente dans l'histoire scientifique de la première moitié du xixe siècle, que les titres seuls des importants Mémoires qu'il a publiés rempliraient un grand nombre de pages, etc., etc.; mais j'aime mieux l'avouer sincèrement, je me suis aperçu trop tard que j'avais dépassé les limites généralement convenues, et lorsqu'il ne me restait plus le temps nécessaire pour donner une autre forme à mon travail. Je me soumets donc sans réserve aux critiques qu'on pourra m'adresser à ce sujet. Je ferai seulement remarquer à tous ceux qui, venant chercher ici un délassement, n'y trouveraient malheureusement que de la fatigue, qu'un vieillard se laissant entraîner à parler avec trop de développement des mérites divers d'un ami, a peut-être droit à quelque indulgence...
