Écrit en 1813 en faveur du retour des Bourbons sur le trône de France, publié au moment où l'Empereur abdiquait, ce texte fameux est composé de trois parties: (1) un jugement féroce sur Buonaparte, (2) une preuve de la nécessité de rassembler les Français autour de leur souverain légitime et historique, et (3) une justification de la politique des étrangers alliés des Bourbons, qui s'apprêtent, d'ailleurs, à envahir le territoire français.
Vie de Rancé, dernier écrit de Chateaubriand, est un travail d'historien.
