Escrita en 1919, la carta de Franz Kakfa a su padre expresa sentimientos de inferioridad y acusa un cierto rechazo paterno. Pero no se puede tomar esta carta como un relato completamente autorreferencial ni como un mensaje real a su padre. Tanto es así que su amigo íntimo y editor póstumo, Max Brod, no la incluyó en el volumen dedicado a su correspondencia, sino en el que reúne sus escritos literarios. "Como la carta nunca llegó a su destinatario -se justificó Brod-, no cumplió la función de una carta". La decisión lo cambia todo: acompañada de textos ficcionales, la violenta misiva pierde en parte su carácter de documento autobiográfico. A este criterio tiene que haber contribuido el hecho de que Kafka pasó (o hizo pasar) a máquina el manuscrito e incluso llegó a corregir la versión en limpio, cuidado reservado exclusivamente a los relatos que serían dados a la imprenta. Incluso Brod sostiene, en su propia biografía, que el padre de Kafka no era el tirano que pinta su hijo, una razón más para leer esta carta con mucha cautela, con mayor predisposición a leer literatura que no ficción.

It appeared that the Traveler had responded to the invitation of the Commandant only out of politeness, when he had been invited to attend the execution of a soldier condemned for disobeying and insulting his superior. Of course, interest in the execution was not very high, not even in the penal colony itself. At least, here in the small, deep, sandy valley, closed in on all sides by barren slopes, apart from the Officer and the Traveler there were present only the Condemned, a vacant-looking man with a broad mouth and dilapidated hair and face, and the Soldier, who held the heavy chain to which were connected the small chains which bound the Condemned Man by his feet and wrist bones, as well as by his neck, and which were also linked to each other by connecting chains. The Condemned Man had an expression of such dog-like resignation that it looked as if one could set him free to roam around the slopes and would only have to whistle at the start of the execution for him to return.

The story of The Trial's publication is almost as fascinating as the novel itself. Kafka intended his parable of alienation in a mysterious bureaucracy to be burned, along with the rest of his diaries and manuscripts, after his death in 1924.
