Ingen har som han gennemtænkt og gennemlevet det idealistiske tankegods, som udgør rygraden i dansk guldalderkultur. Som livslang professor i filosofi udgav han originale værker inden for flere af åndslivets fagområder, ikke mindst psykologi og æstetik. Mest kendt for eftertiden er hans to Gabrielis-romaner, hvori han omsætter sin tids intellektuelle stridigheder til en livsfilosofisk, eksistentiel praksis.
