En su sostenido trato con la religión, manifestó una marcada hostilidad frente al cristianismo, al que caracterizaba como una moral de esclavos, producto del resentimiento de los débiles contra los fuertes. Así, la moral cristiana y la metafísica platónica y cristiana se presentan como dos de los objetivos más recurrentes de sus ataques. El Anticristo fue escrito en el final del verano de 1888 y en el comienzo del otoño. Este polémico texto pudo ser redactado rápidamente gracias al material acumulado para La voluntad de poder. En función de las vicisitudes ocurridas a partir del derrumbe intelectual de Nietzsche, el manuscrito no vio la luz hasta fines de 1894, año en que fue publicado por el Archivo Nietzsche.

The cause of this lies in its many-sided character, in the lack of an abstract unity, and in the inorganic aggregation of heterogeneous scientific activities which are connected with one another only by the name "Philology." It must be freely admitted that philology is to some extent borrowed from several other sciences, and is mixed together like a magic potion from the most outlandish liquors, ores, and bones.
