Held Rostem sprach, als er am Morgen war erwacht: Auch heute hab ich nicht zu reiten in die Schlacht. Afrasiab, der Fürst von Turan, läßet ruhn Die Waffen, friedlich blüht das Reich von Iran nun; Doch in der Friedensruh was soll ich selber thun? Da rüstet' er sich schnell zur Jagd, er band in Eile Den Gürtel fest, und hieng den Köcher um voll Pfeile. Den Bogen prüft' er, ob er nicht die Kraft verlor; Dann zog er aus dem Stall den edlen Hengst hervor. Dem war die Weile dort wie seinem Herren lang; Er wieherte vor Lust, als er ihn setzt' in Gang. Er schwang sich auf den Rachs, und sagte nicht ein Wort Den Seinigen im Haus, in Eile ritt er fort. Der Mark von Turan zu wandt er sein lockig Haupt, Alswie ein Löwe, der nach seiner Beute schnaubt. Wie zu der Turanmark er hingekommen war, Die Haide nam er da voll wilder Elke war. Wie eine Rose war erblüht des Helden Wange Vor Lust, er tummelte den Rachs mit raschem Gange. Mit Pfeil und Bogen bald, mit Keul und Fangeschnur, Ein Dutzend Stücke warf er nieder auf die Flur.
