Die hansischen Kaufleute haben, gestützt auf weitgehende Privilegien, die einflußreiche Stellung, welche sie in der ersten Hälfte des 14. Jahrhunderts im englischen Handelsleben errungen hatten, bis ins 16. Jahrhundert innegehabt. Doch haben sie ihre Herrschaft auf den englischen Märkten nicht ohne Kampf behauptet. Die englischen Kaufleute machten immer wieder den Versuch, die Freiheiten der Hansen zu beseitigen und ihre Konkurrenten aus der Ein- und Ausfuhr Englands zu verdrängen. Anderthalb Jahrhunderte sind ihre Anstrengungen ergebnislos geblieben. Ebenso haben die Engländer in dieser Zeit in den östlichen Gebieten, welche dem europäischen Westen wichtige Rohstoffe lieferten, nicht festen Fuß fassen können. Es soll die Aufgabe der vorliegenden Arbeit sein, diese Kämpfe der Hansen um ihre Privilegien und Stellung in England und die Versuche der englischen Kaufleute, in die Gebiete der hansischen Handelsherrschaft einzudringen, zu schildern. Ich habe die Darstellung nur bis zu dem großen Ansturm, der um 1520 unter Wolseys Führung auf die hansischen Freiheiten stattfand, nicht bis zur Aufhebung der Privilegien unter Elisabeth geführt. Denn in dem letzten halben Jahrhundert dieses großen Ringens waren die Gegner nicht mehr dieselben wie früher. Die Hanse ging unaufhaltsam ihrer Auflösung entgegen, während sich England unter der Leitung seiner Könige zu einem festen und starken Nationalstaat konsolidierte, der seine Wirtschaftspolitik allein nach nationalen Gesichtspunkten einrichtete.Diese hundertundfünfzigjährige Periode deutsch-englischer Beziehungen ist im ganzen noch nicht behandelt worden. Daenell führt seine Darstellung nur bis zum Utrechter Frieden, dem Höhepunkt der hansischen Handelsherrschaft in England; Schanz behandelt in der Hauptsache nur die Zeit der beiden ersten Tudors.
