Als erster Berichterstatter der klassischen Antike unterscheidet Caesar konsequent zwischen Galliern und Germanen, wobei er erstere als deutlich zivilisierter beschreibt, als die raubeinigen, primitiven Germanen, die für ihn ein willkommenes Feindbild darstellen. - Als Caesar in diesen Krieg zieht, ist er 48 Jahre alt, römischer Konsul und Statthalter dreier Provinzen, von denen zwei im Grenzland zum noch freien Gallien liegen. Der Kriegszug ist, wenn man so will, eine Karrierechance für ihn, um ihn der Alleinherrschaft über Rom näherzubringen. - Die Kämpfe zogen sich von 58 bis 50 v. Chr. hin. Am Ende stand ein »befriedetes«, also ein darniederliegendes Gallien, das jeden Widerstand gegen Rom aufgegeben hatte. Der Blutzoll war enorm. Caesars nächster Schachzug führte ihn mit seinen massiven Truppen in Richtung Rom. Die Stadt sollte bald ihm gehören.
