    Novembre 1618: la comparsa di tre comete non solo eccita i timori superstiziosi, ma tiene "in continuo esercizio i primi ingegni d'Europa". Ottobre 1623: si conclude la stampa del Saggiatore di Galileo Galilei, colui che gli Accademici Lincei salutano come "lo scopritore non di nuove terre, ma di non più vedute parti del cielo". Spaziando dalla genesi del suono all'origine del calore alla composizione della luce "in atomi realmente indivisibili" Galileo entra pubblicamente nella disputa contro "Lotario Sarsi Sigensano, l'astronomico e filosofico scorpione", cioè il gesuita Ottavio Grassi. Nel ripercorrere la vicenda delle sue scoperte Galileo delinea insieme una difesa del proprio operato e l'apologia della ricerca scientifica, sempre più insofferente dei vincoli imposti da autorità teologiche e politiche. Nel tempo in cui, come scrive il poeta John Donne, "la nuova filosofia mette tutto in dubbio", Galileo si affida alla matematica come a una guida sicura per uscire da "un oscuro laberinto" e comprendere il Grande Libro della natura; ma "l'artista toscano" non dimentica per questo il ruolo dell'esperimento e l'apporto della tecnica. Geometria, esperienza e "discorso" (cioè arte dell'argomentazione) cooperano cosi alla confutazione dell'errore in un'impresa che il singolo studioso può tradire solo col rendere il suo intelletto "mancipio - cioè servo - dell'intelletto di un altr'uomo"
