C'est presque un lieu commun de dire que le XXe siècle s'ouvre par une crise morale. La crise religieuse commencée par les libertins du XVIIe siècle, aggravée par les philosophes du XVIIIe, a fini par se dénouer en séparant du christianisme l'école publique et l'Eglise de l'Etat. Les principes de la morale chrétienne, bien que critiqués par les philosophes, conservaient encore jusqu'en 1880 leur empire sur l'éducation des consciences. Les philosophes d'ailleurs, tout en se livrant à leurs critiques, n'en demeuraient pas moins respectueux des préceptes du Décalogue. On ne s'entendait plus sans doute sur l'origine des préceptes, mais les préceptes eux-mêmes restaient unanimement acceptés. Tu honoreras ton père et ta mère, tu ne tueras pas, tu ne voleras pas, tu ne mentiras pas, tu ne commettras point d'adultère, tous ces commandements demeuraient incontestables et incontestés. Mais depuis qu'on a voulu aussi laïciser la morale, la source sacrée d'où dérivaient traditionnellement ces préceptes ayant été jugée suspecte, on s'est demandé très vite si les eaux valaient plus que la source d'où elles coulaient; si le dogme chrétien étant éliminé des croyances sociales, la société devait rester encore fidèle à la morale chrétienne, enfin s'il ne convenait pas de substituer aux commandements, survivances de la vieille foi, de nouveaux préceptes puisés dans la science et acquis par la raison...
