When the Irish artist and antiquarian George Petrie (1790-1866) died, this two-volume collection of almost 300 Irish-language inscriptions was edited by the archaeologist Margaret Stokes (1832-1900) and published in 1872-8. Volume 1 is devoted to inscriptions connected with the important early medieval monastery at Clonmacnoise.

Reissued in its 1845 second edition, this illustrated work by George Petrie (1790-1866) helped cement his reputation as a founding father of Irish archaeology. Its theories about the origin and uses of Irish round towers have been refined but broadly accepted by modern scholars of ecclesiastical architecture.

Presents all of George Petrie's original text "The Petrie Collection of the Ancient Music of Ireland", the melodies and his introduction. This book contains nearly two hundred melodies as well as song texts in Irish and English. It is prefaced with a biographical essay, which positions the collection in the context of the author's life and work.
