An artwork of its own, this intimate volume inspires both close looking and a beautiful interpretation of abstraction.

Gerhard Richter: Photographs ist dem fotografischen Werk des Künstlers gewidmet und versammelt fotografische Unikate und seltene Foto-Editionen. Ausstellung und Katalog umfassen frühe Selbstportraits, Portraitserien, Landschaften, experimentelle Abstraktionen und Reproduktionen von Richters eigenen Gemälden aus den Jahren 1965 bis 2021 und zeigen, wie Richter das bildnerische Potenzial der Fotografie im Laufe der Jahrzehnte seines Schaffens immer wieder neu ausgelotet hat. Nachdem er früh in seiner Laufbahn Fotografien als konzeptionelles Mittel eingesetzt und auf der Grundlage fotografischer Bilder verschwommene Gemälde geschaffen hatte, fotografierte er auch vorhandene Fotos unscharf ab und imitierte damit den eigenen malerischen Effekt, während er den Akt des Malens selbst umging. Der bemerkenswert großformatige Mao z.B. ist ein fotografisches Portrait aus dem Jahr 1970, das eine unscharfe Reproduktion eines Foto-Portraits anderen Ursprungs ist. Mit demselben Interesse an der Überlagerung von Darstellungsebenen fotografierte Richter schon früh auch seine eigenen Gemälde und betrachtete diese Reproduktionen als völlig neue Werke. Gezeigt werden FotoEditionen einiger ikonischer Gemälde Richters, etwa Onkel Rudi, Ema und Mustang-Staffel, sowie eine unikate Fotografie seines Gemäldes Blumen von 1992. Während seines gesamten Schaffens nutzte Richter die Kamera auch als Werkzeug für visuelle Experimente. Beispiele dafür finden sich u.a. in seinen experimentellen Selbstportraits von 1968. Auch die Gruppe mehrfach belichteter Portraits, die Richter 1975 vom Künstlerduo Gilbert & George aufnahm und zum Teil später als Ölgemälde ausführte, strahlt eine spielerische Unmittelbarkeit aus. Dieter Schwarz, der ehemalige Direktor des Kunstmuseums Winterthur, schrieb den einführenden Essay.

Gerhard Richter's book explores the aesthetic and political ramifications of the literary genre of the Denkbild, or thought-image, as it was employed by four major German-Jewish writers and philosophers of the first half of the twentieth century: Theodor W. Adorno, Walter Benjamin, Ernst Bloch, and Siegfried Kracauer.

Over a period of six decades he has created a stylistically diverse and complex body of work, which confirms Richter's rank as the most important artist alive today. The six-volume scholarly catalogue raisonné of all the paintings and sculptures features numerous full-page color reproductions of the works, as well as complete technical information on all of the art and the artist's handwritten notes, as well as provenance, exhibitions, and reference literature. His oeuvre encompasses over three thousand paintings and sculptures. Richter studied from 1961 to 1964 at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where he was later a professor . Richter lives and works in Cologne. DIETMAR ELGER studied a the University of Hamburg and has held the role of director of the Gerhard Richter Archive at the Staatlichen Kunstsammlungen Dresden since 2006.
