In seinen Texten konzentriert er sich hauptsächlich auf die psychischen Vorgänge in seinen Figuren. Gerhart Hauptmann (1862-1946) war ein deutscher Dramatiker und Schriftsteller. Bis heute gilt er als eine der wichtigsten Figuren des literarischen Naturalismus.
Vor der rauen Kulisse der Ostsee entfaltet Dichter Gerhart Hauptmann sein Kunstlerdrama rund um den Maler Gabriel Schilling, der auf der Fischerinsel Oye sein kunstlerisches Wirken entfaltet. Eines Tages trifft unangekundigt die Russin Hanna Elias auf der Insel ein. Mit ihr beginnt der Maler eine langjahrige Affare - trotz seiner Ehe mit Eveline. Doch seine Frau kommt hinter das gut gehutete Geheimnis und das Schicksal nimmt seinen Lauf. -
In der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts betreut Emilie, die Schwester des verstorbenen Kaufmanns Ruschewey, ihre vier Nichten. Sie hat große Pläne für ihre Pflegetöchter. Diese werden jäh durchkreuzt, als sich die Älteste der Mädchen in einen reisenden Schiffsarzt verliebt, der nach Südafrika fahren soll. Emilie will Agathe stattdessen mit ihrem Pflegesohn verheiraten. Zwischen Irrungen und Wirrungen machen sich die vier jungen Mädchen auf die Suche nach ihrem persönlichen Glück. Gerhart Hauptmann (1862–1946) gilt bis heute als einer der bedeutendsten Vertreter des Naturalismus. Inspiriert von der griechischen und römischen Antike wollte er zunächst Bildhauer werden, bevor er nach der Heirat mit Marie Thienemann mit der Schriftstellerei begann. Seine Heimat Schlesien, aber auch seine Zeit im brandenburgischen Erkner spiegeln sich maßgeblich in seinem literarischen Werk. Zu seinen bekanntesten Werken gehört neben dem Drama Die Weber auch seine Erzählung Bahnwärter Thiel. 1912 erhielt Hauptmann den Literaturnobelpreis.
Hauptmann adaptiert mit seinem Drama das mittelhochdeutsche Versepos "e;Der arme Heinrich"e; von Hartmann von Aue. Erzahlt wird die Leidensgeschichte des Edelmannes Heinrich, der schwer erkrankt und sich aus der Gesellschaft zuruckzieht. Er entschliet sich zu sterben, besucht jedoch zuvor den Hof einer Meiersfamilie. Besonders die Meierstochter Ottegebe ist Heinrich sehr zugetan. Doch Heinrich will sterben...-
Gerhart Hauptmanns Ausflug ins Reich der Mythen und Legenden: Mit seinem 1909 uraufgefuhrten Theaterstuck "e;Griselda"e; adaptiert er den Stoff rund um eine der beruhmtesten Frauenfiguren der europaischen Folklore, die zum ersten Mal in Boccaccios "e;Decamerone"e; in Erscheinung tritt.
