A collection of seven short essays, which provides a brief overview of selected Hadiths (traditions of the Prophet Muhammad used as sources for religious law). The topics covered are political integrity, the role of women in society and the military, civil rights, privacy, cruelty to animals, family planning, and torture.
First published in 1996. The writer was in Cairo in the period with which the novel deals. None the less, all the characters and all the events are the product of his imagination. Furthermore, incidents portraying real personalities mentioned in the novel are also fictional.
This novel relates the experiences of four young men arriving in Cairo as students in the late 1950s. Freed from the restraints of strict religious conservatism, they plunge into the easy-going ways of Cairo, before being forced to react in various ways to the sudden outbreak of the Suez conflict.
