Madame Butterfly is a three-act lyrical drama written by Italian composer Giacomo Puccini in 1906. The story revolves around a young Japanese geisha named Cio-Cio-San, also known as Butterfly, who falls in love with an American naval officer named Pinkerton. Despite the warnings of her family and friends, Butterfly marries Pinkerton and converts to Christianity, hoping to start a new life with him in America. However, Pinkerton leaves Japan soon after the wedding, promising to return, but Butterfly is left alone and pregnant. She waits faithfully for Pinkerton's return, even after three years, but when he finally does come back, he brings with him his American wife. Butterfly is heartbroken and decides to take her own life, leaving behind her young son.
