Il mondo si è capovolto. La faccia di tutte le cose è sfigurata. L¿umanità non riconosce più sè medesima. La terra è coperta di orrende cicatrici. Cesare si avventurava in Gallia senza nessun disegno ben definito, con scarsa conoscenza del paese e delle sue genti , con non poca trepidazione. Il caso gli aveva dato il governo delle due Gallie così all¿improvviso e all¿impensata, nel febbraio dell¿anno precedente; egli era stato, tutto quell¿anno, siffattamente preso dalle turbolente contese e dagli arruffati intrighi politici, che non aveva potuto informarsi a fondo sulla Gallia, sia leggendo i libri dei viaggiatori, sia consultando i banchieri, i mercanti, gli uomini politici che dalla Gallia narbonese erano in relazione coi Galli liberi.

Nella seconda metà del secolo quinto avanti Cristo, Roma era ancora una repubblica aristocratica di contadini, di circa 450 miglia quadrate di superficie , e con una popolazione libera, sparsa quasi tutta nella campagna e divisa in diciassette distretti o tribù rustiche, che non poteva superare le 150 000 anime . Il maggior numero delle famiglie possedevano un piccolo campo; e genitori e figli, vivendo nel piccolo tugurio e lavorando insieme, lo coltivavano quasi tutto a grano, con poche viti ed ulivi; pascolavano sulle vicine terre pubbliche qualche capo di bestiame; fabbricavano in casa gli strumenti rustici di legno e i vestiti, recandosi solo di tempo in tempo nella città fortificata;

Ma se l¿incendio della guerra si era così presto spento sulla aperta pianura gallica, pigliava forza invece e divampava e si dilatava, appiccandosi dall¿una all¿altra vallata, nelle Alpi. Publio Silio, dopo avere liberata la Istria da Pannoni e da Norici, era sceso nella valle del Po e si era recato a combattere nella Valtellina e nella Val Camonica gli insorti Vennoneti e Camunni . Ma altri popoli, trascinati dall¿esempio dei Vennoneti, che avevan fama di essere una delle genti alpine più ardimentose , si erano levati in armi: i Trumplini, nella Val Trompia, le numerose tribù dei Leponzi che occupavano le moderne Alpi Lepontine, cioè tutte le valli italiane e svizzere sboccanti sul lago...

I cinque volumi dell'opera furono pubblicati dal 1901 al 1907, e sono incentrati sulla crisi della Repubblica romana che portò al potere Giulio Cesare e poi l'imperatore Augusto. La fluidità della narrazione assicurò all'opera un clamoroso successo di pubblico, anche all'estero, dove fu presto tradotta e ammirata, ma fu stroncata dagli accademici italiani. Lontano sia dagli impianti storici che privilegiavano le vicende politico-militari sia dalla storiografia critica e filologica, e attento piuttosto alle vicende delle classi in lotta, egli costruì una storia sociale e prese a modello il Mommsen, rovesciando però le conclusioni della Römische Geschichte. In questo volume, con lo stesso metodo adoperato nei due precedenti, ho studiato e narrato gli eventi che dalla morte di Cesare vanno alla seduta del Senato in cui Ottaviano ricevé il titolo di Augustus. Sono diciassette anni di storia - dal 15 marzo del 44 a. C. al 16 gennaio del 27 a. C. -: diciassette anni tra i più importanti della storia di Roma, perché in essi è la ragione ultima di tutto il governo e di tutta l'opera augustea; tra i più difficili, perché, eccezion fatta della primissima parte, i documenti sono molto frammentari, confusi, lacunosi, guasti dalle falsificazioni dei partiti e dagli errori degli storici, che narrarono nei secoli seguenti quegli eventi senza comprenderli. Io considero come una leggenda, che non ha fondamento alcuno nei documenti, l'affermazione tante volte ripetuta che Augusto fu l'esecutore dei disegni di Cesare. Quali si fossero - e noi non lo sappiamo con precisione - questi disegni, nei diciassette anni, la cui storia è narrata in questo libro, avvenne un così grande sconvolgimento, le condizioni dell'Italia e dell'Impero mutarono talmente, che Augusto ebbe un compito del tutto diverso da quello che spettò a Cesare. Un altro grande errore, che ha travisato tutta la storia della prima parte dell'Impero, giudico poi l'altra idea, comunemente accettata, che Augusto sia il fondatore della monarchia a Roma.
